I qualified for the trials a year ago but when I tried to book the race hotel a month ago, they had no more rooms. I am staying by Hermann Park in Houston because it looked like there would be more to do. If anyone is interested in going in on a rental car and is staying in that area, let me know. I will email you. My room was 98/night on expedia.

They were pretty expensive. I save 300 by staying further away. Also, downtown Hosuton is pretty boring.
I was under the impression that if you got the OTQ all that stuff was paid for.
No way do qualifiers get accomodations paid. The race director has to give the big wigs at USATF, NCAATF, IAAF, BAA, NYRR, etc. free perks otherwise he/she/shim won't get treated in a reciprocal manner with free accomodations at their meets and thons. That's how the system works. The cave man, the Romans, the Persians, the Greeks, and now the Americans have done quid pro quo since the Kenyans invented the human race after the Ice Age. So don't expect things to change soon...

I would have spent money on the car and skipped the hotel room. I went to a race a couple weeks ago it was about 28° at night and I ran great the next morning. All you need is a couple blankets.
It shouldn't be that cold but it was in the 30s when I went to the race in 04.
All the men will get everything paid for because they only have A qualifiers but not the B standard women. I will pay for the rental car either way but just thought I'd check to see if anyone was in the same boat since there are over 200 women who qualified.

That's why we see the same old people over and over again at every marathon and track meet holding a stop watch, or a flag, or a clip board, trying to act busy and important. I never knew that.

there are a lot of museums close to Hermann Park, and Rice Univ. is right there.

Not really. There is plenty to do in downtown Houston, just as much as most places. You're in a decent area if you're staying in the Med Center vicinity. Make sure you check out Rice Village if you have some time to kill. Hermann Park has been fixed up quite a bit and is good for runners.
