Portland should do the right thing and let the guy go.
I don't *necessarily* disagree with you, but I've always wondered about this sentiment. Why is releasing a guy to an in-state rival (don't believe me, ask Rob - even if the folks in Eugene won't admit it) after making a commitment to the first program that put A LOT into him so clearly the "right thing" to do? If it's an academic reason or to use a 5th year at a graduate program that Portland doesn't have, I completely understand. But I doubt this is the case :). If Rob (& his AD - who ultimately decides) release him, I wouldn't be surprised if the feeling is "mutual." But I would completely understand if they didn't & wouldn't blame them.
Old news. Legendary, but old news.

What possible incentive does Portland have to release him, so he can turn right around and compete with them? Might be different if he transferred to some place well out of the region, like, say, Florida State.
I understand his thinking, that he's built himself up to be a serious performer (at least in XC), and he can see with LV and Centro gone, there is scholarship money available....and the folks at Portland would say, "Yeah, built himself up to be a major performer at OUR expense".
He is going to Oregon because his girlfriend goes there. Leave him alone. He is a really nice guy!
Uhhh... Jenny B, Centro in august?

What we don’t know is what went on behind the scenes that made Dunbar want to leave. Honestly I doubt it’s any drama and Dunbar doesn’t look like the guy who would want to burn bridges or do something to where the AD wouldn’t release him. Plus looking at “rival” schools perspective, the only time where things could get interesting is the regional meet, but goodness the west usually has like 4+ teams that make it out so I doubt Oregon would be jeopardizing Portland’s chances next season in making it to Nationals.
I think that he’s coming to the point in his career that it’s put up or shut up time and he wants to compete with the best. Not necessarily in cross country, but in track where Dunbar has not performed at his best (honestly he should be a 13:30 guy instead of having a PR in the 13:40s). The 9:01 in a snowstorm (and yes I saw the video of it years ago when it happened) is certainly no joke, Dunbar’s talent is there, it’s just that he may need some other resources to help him out which Portland can’t afford to give him, but Oregon can.
I do wish Portland the best though and I’m certainly am happy for Oregon (even though I despise them) after the sh*t Lukas pulled. I just hope that no bridges were burned in this process and I for one am happy Dunbar did this after the season was over and before indoor started.
He still left in the middle of the year. In other words, portland could not recruit using his scholarship money. If I were portland there is no way I would release to oregon. No way!
According to Vin in Eugene today, Dunbar is not the only transfer that the Ducks will have this Spring. The second name has yet to be released.
At least it wasn't Stanfurd.

The other transfer is Verzbicas from Colorado.
wasn't there somebody that was planning to use their 5th year at grad school? cabral maybe? hmm
UP has an incredible program. Cross Country is a sport that is filled with nerdy hard working kids, and UP has had a strong tradition of runners who were especially nerdy and exceptionally hard working. Fans of Portland, like me, take great pride in the program because it has made incredible improvements over the years without sacrificing its culture of camaraderie and academic success. Every single person on that team contributes to the success of UPXC, scholastically and athletically; in my eyes they are all elite, at least compared to a dinosaur like me.
It hurts to see Trevor Dunbar leave because he was the standard bearer of the UPXC program. It hurts the program for several reasons: 1) He drew talent in like David Kinsella did. Elite recruits could look at him and say "Hey, Portland is serious, I want to be this guy for Portland in a few years." 2) He was an immense talent. USATF XC Champion, West Region Champion, International Level Jr. Runner... He brought home a lot of hardware for UP and his absence is going to be sorely missed in the results column. 3) He's going to U of O. That hurts bad, really, really bad. UP is great for undergrads, but it doesn't have many graduate school programs. I can understand leaving UP for a graduate school program... anywhere but Oregon. C'mon man, go to Stanford, UCLA, Cal, Kenya, anywhere but Eugene.
I don't fear for Portland's future, they still have incredible talent and Conner is only improving as a coach. UPXC is going to continue to land smart, talented, hard working kids and turn them into tough as nails runners and sharp as a tack students. Guys like Michael Kilburg, David Kinsella and John Moore ate gravel pooped concrete, crushed hellacious workouts and studied until midnight because all of their teammates did the same. Trevor will be missed, but the program is what matters and Grape Crush is still only getting stronger.
2nd transfer has to be Cabral, but would think that would be after the spring season
Cabral? As in Jonathan Cabral, who is already on the team? Who are you thinking of?
Donn Cabral. Excellent steepler from Princeton
here is my thoughts
1) If UP does not release him, it will probably help UO in the long run because they will be forced to use him in two years, (that stacked recruiting class, is still stacked with out LV, and if Gedyon finally shows up they will have a shot at the title)
2) Does anyone know why he transferred? like was it all running related, or something more? maybe he hated his life or something like that?
