Being a little dramatic don't you think. Obviously, NBC cares about it some, they're devoting 2 hours of coverage to it. They don't care about it as much as people on letsrun, but that's understandable.
And your anti-competition comparison is ridiculous. Who is the competitor NBC is trying to kill off?[/quote]
If NBC isn't threatened by competition then why don't they allow some online service like Flotrack to stream it live?
Networks, pharmaceutical companies, mining companies, et cetera purchase rights all the time that they don't intend to fully exploit. They just don't want anyone else to use it meanwhile and that usually sucks for the consumer but it. However, the way NBC can tie up the Olympics, and in this case the marathon trials especially sucks because the Olympics, and presumably Olympic trials, is a common good. Could NBC purchase the rights to the next State of the Union Address?
This about sums it up.

Your original point was along the lines of NBC buying the rights to prevent someone else from getting them. You used a comparison of Pepsi buying off a regional brand and killing it. That's what my question was directed at. Do you think NBC bought the rights to broadcast the Trials because they wanted to prevent Flotrack from doing so?
Since NBC is actually going to broadcast the Trials, it seems pretty obvious why they wouldn't want someone else broadcasting it.
