He still has a great kick. I saw him kick down a couple little kids in the last 100 meters.

On the other hand, Ressey Byers rolled (norcal guy out of Santa Rosa HS...soph at Sac State now I think)

I created my training plan for people like Stember. Too many athletes let the years go by and can't run anywhere close to what they used to be able to do. Stember's story is common. What worked in high school doesn't work anymore for people like him. You gotta train like a novice for a few years to get back to your high school times.
For ten years I had no training or exercise of any kind and I had put on 60 pounds. All it took was a couple of months of jogging and I was able to run 19:44 at the local Jingle Bells 5K.
And my PR is only 16:37. So does that mean I didn't live up to my potential? Should I have been an elite runner in my prime?
Saving himself for Zurich.
Was he wearing trainers?
There are Kenyans still in the womb who can run faster than that!
Pop those little african out with the umbilical still attached, and both mother and embryo can crack 19 minutes in a local 5K.
Probably maybe he could have been faster but it also says how deluded some LR posters are regarding talent and anyone running a sub 6 mile without training and 5 minutes on baseball training....
did I waste my talent? wrote:

No. You and Stember ran a decent enough time. People just don't realize that it takes time to come back.
That's a total disappointment, I can't believe he can't be with in 18 minutes bracket. I thought if he miss cracking 18, he would definitely be in 18 minutes something.
I can do 18 something without serious training and I am older than him!
At least he had the guts to step up and race. Would love to see the hotshots on this site created their own charitybet and set a decent goal for 5k.

That's the kind of self-promoting B.S. that Dean Karnazes pulls. I suppose it's beneficial for charity but I don't particularly want to come off as a conceited tool to most of the serious running community (even if the hobby joggers dig it).
I did the airplane at the finish in Stember's "honor". Too bad he was a few minutes back.
Think about it, this race must have been brutal for him. He probably tried to go out in 5:30, which ended up being 5:40 and him being WAY more winded then he thought. Then, he still had to suffer two more miles, the second probably at 6:30 and the last 1.1 in 7:20, the whole time thinking about how much further and further from 18 he's slipping back. It just goes to show even the 'immortal' Olympians are human and know what it's like to have this kind of day.
Ran a 14:30 5 years ago in college. Didn't run a step for 5 years then ran 4 miles 3 times a week for 8 weeks and was able to go 19:05. My wife who ran 18:00 in college took 3 years off and ran a race with no training and did 22:00 I am sorry but 19:40 is just weak from Stember.
Anyone stop and think that maybe Stember doesn't care about running anymore? The guy spent most of his life working his tail off to be an elite and now that real life has set in he's probably forgotten all about that and tried to lead a normal life. Let me tell you something, I had some success at the D1 level but after college I was totally okay with hanging it up and focusing on other aspects of life such as my job, beautiful wife and three kids. Running 15 minutes for 5k takes commitment, as "slow" as that is considered on here. Maybe Michael doesnt have the time to give running what he used to and that's perfectly okay. Maybe he just doesn't want to. He's already been at the highest level he can go. Running is not everything in life. Hop off of stember...he's just a regular now...gettin lapped at the Y.
Why don't you check YOUR reality, hotshot 223! he was not a 400 runner, butthead!
For a former Elite, 19:30 shows a lack of respect for himself, and the sport.
Are there extenuating circumstances? Drug or alcohol abuse? Mental Illness? Injury?
Was it at least a relaxed 19:30?
he was an 800 and 1500 meter runner:
it's okay wrote:

Of course we realize that, but the point is, we are all like that, just like you explain with your job, kids, wife, etc. Only we were not talented enough to qualify for the Olympics or win NCAAs in our prime. We all went on to lead normal lives, like him, and have left the serious running behind. Heck, like I said, I'm 44 and that's my marathon pace. I am not a marathononer, I am too muscular and can even pinch an inch around the midsection. So that is just nonsensically slow for a guy of his stature, even if he just started training for it.
I know nothing about the charity bet deal he was utilizing, but could it have been better for his charity, based on how the bets came in, that he missed the time? So his charity won more, based on the bets laid down, so the fix was in?
I said 18:15 and that was if he was 10 or less pounds over his racing weight. Any heavier would be big trouble and it was it looked. Damn what a choke job!
