I've got that book as well, though it's in a pile somewhere. I think Walsh was a friend of Horton's and sort of followed him around.
I was never in Eugene during the summer and I never talked with Steve about this.
As I have noted elsewhere I was not one of Pre's closest friends and seldom ran with him on a regular basis. 73-74 we lived in the same neighbourhood and, besides the Sunday runs mentioned earlier, we would run into each other on our morning runs, but Pre always ran those faster than I did so we just ran like 1/2 a mile or so together before spliting up. Outside this I picked a few hard sessions every now and then I would run with Steve.
As a result I do not have any information on Pre's running the summer you refer to. This is really news to me and I must say I wonder why he spent a summer working on speed when he basically had the season behind him. Maybe he wanted to see what he could do with that type of training for some other time. I do not know.

KnutK-
what about xc training? what kind of workouts did Oregon do back then?
Bowerman's xc training was based on the same principles. I do not remember spesific workouts, but believe there were more intervals in each session and that some of them were longer. When I was in Eugene Bowerman did not put all that much into the XC-season.
If you are interested I could look up in my notes and see if I have written down some examples of what we did, but I do not have time for that right now.
Dellinger's XC workouts were harder than Bowerman's. Bill D had us do some 10 mile runs with 4*3/4 miles spread around during the run. These were tough and hard running, but very good workouts.

A very ancient thread I'm responding to -- mainly because I "googled" my old h.s. running mate Mike McClendon and found this stuff from 2004. Don't even know if you'll get this... McClendon and I were high school seniors together. I don't believe he trained only 25 miles a week. In h.s. he consistently ran 60 miles a week when people weren't doing this in East Texas (he had been h.s. state champion in wisconsin his junior year, when he was really a sophomore in years.) He ran a 4:15 and won state as a senior. He once ran a marathon in training.
