I think this is going to become less and less true as the marathon continues to become more of a specialized event, like 5000 and 10000 and the top runners tackle the marathon in their prime (early to mid-20's) as opposed to the classic method of waiting until you have maxed out in the shorter distances.
Sure people can run fast times in their mid-30's, but I doubt you'll be seeing many major marathon winners over the age of 33 in the future.
