Exactly. Anyone who quits on his team mid-season is a total D-bag. Glad he is joining his brethren.
What ? did you get Rupp ? solinsky ??
If he wants to sandbag by being the jack of all trades, we don't want him anyway.
That's where runners go after they've failed. Congrats, you get our leftovers.

I'd just like to point out that Lutz is not the top college freshman.
In fact, the top college freshman could probably run circles around Lutz during a race, suffer an attack of irritable bowel syndrome, go to the bathroom, and STILL finish ahead of him.
When Lutz manages to defeat Lawi Lalang, THEN he can be called the top college freshman.
And really, don't give that crap about Lalang not being a freshman on the basis of age. If that's true, then what the Hell was Chelanga supposed to be? Or Centro even? He did redshirt a track season after all, so does that mean he's too old to be a senior? After all, being a college senior means you're in your fourth year right?
He's no gift. I give him a season or two - slow out of the water - misses the lead group - race over - maybe top 10. The Brownlees and dozens of others are faster, more experienced, and tougher.
It's going to be harder in this sport than sucking it up and running track - where he is a real talent.
Should have chosen his college better. Duh.
A top talent who is almost a top 20 Pac 12 cross country runner.
Its disturbing how many triathletes are accepted these days on LR. Not long ago not only were tri's regarded as a joke, but anyone admitting to competing in one would be hunted down by Letsrunners and beaten. There's definitely Tri Creep infusing LR. Times change - usually for the worse.
Runners are athletes who cannot multitask
Triathletes are athletes who can
As someone who has competed in running races from 5k to 100-miler, and triathlons from Olympic distance to double Ironman, I can honestly say that tris are much more difficult than running. Runners are definitely talented...no doubt. But triathletes are passionate, committed, and extremely talented.

...at doing 3 things at a mediocre level.
But I guess you have to be passionate and committed to train for three different disciplines knowing that the best in the world at each respective discipline would crush you.

Yeah, because we all know how uncommitted and un-passionate runners are.
I respect your opinion. I'm just giving my two cents as someone who has raced both sports, at many distances (not at the elite level, of course).

Yeah, because we all know how uncommitted and un-passionate runners are.
And decathletes are just the laziest losers around, of course.
what does it say about tri when a guy who wasn't top 20 in the PAC 12 and only 4th on his own team in running is the greatest junior triathlete in the world?
62nd != TOP

It has nothing to do with Lalang's age, it's the fact that he competeted in the NCAA LAST YEAR! I'm sorry, that makes it really tough to think of him as a freshman.
