Ummmmm... ever heard of David McCarthy? way to shit on the second-most accomplished runner in the NE after Lenny Korir.
Honestly this thread has not given nearly enough props to the 'Lo for being an awesome venue and having a spectator-average course. Give credit where credit is due, to Lenny, to Buffalo, and to me for incorrectly predicting an Iona victory. I made my choice while urinating off by back porch and therefore it shouldn't count against me in the eyes of any of you heathens.

obviously McCarthy read this and got pissed... what a wanker, thinks he's too good for providence then comes back with his tail between his legs. At least he is running well now.
McCarthy is pretty good, , as a miler, has not gotten much out of that so far.
Why were times so slow? Just a tough course or bad weather?
course was very easy
but crazzy wind
I trolled a couple of you pretty hard, thanks for playing.

The course would be nothing if the ground was hard. The only "obstacles" are 3-foot-high "hills" near the sand traps, several semi-tight U-turn bends and maybe some uneven footing/change in surface in a few spots. The ground was definitely a bit soft for a lot of it, enough to slow the pace down by I'm guessing over 5/less than 10 seconds a mile. But the obvious factor was the 20-30 mph wind. With ideal weather and a totally trim and hard surface, the times probably would have been at least 75 seconds faster, putting around 25-30 guys under 31:00. So the elevation profile is nonexistent. Basically a pancake, but plenty of the turns seemed kind of tight.
The first 1k was hit in 2:59 (with a cross/tailwind) and then they looped back into that wind and ran the next 609 in 2:01 (5:20 pace). Actually, that was the lone leader (one of the Albany guys I think, didn't notice who really), who hit the mile in 5:00 and had about 7 seconds on the field. The main pack seriously probably went over 5:30 pace for a half mile somewhere in there. Still pretty slow (pack at 10:13-10:18) and not much happening 2 miles into it. It looked like they really respected that wind and didn't want to fight it early in the race. Then the pace finally got going and it stretched out quickly, but that left people exposed to the wind, so fewer than 20 runners were able to pick it up and average faster than that 5:07 starting pace for the rest of the race. Korir took charge for keeps a little after halfway but he was pushing trying to get a comfortable gap and he actually appeared to be struggling near the end, looking over his shoulder a lot to see if McCarthy was gaining. I didn't think he needed to do that much work and could have just waited until the last mile or even less, but maybe he decided to get a hard sustained effort and did it the way he wanted. He wasn't in danger of losing. Still, I thought he looked really labored and not like the guy who ran 27:29 and won those NCAA track titles. Syracuse really pulled it together big time after a somewhat lackluster season relative to their goals and last year's results. Iona will be in a spot of bother for the big meet if they don't get a 5th guy up near the others. Stogsdill ran but he was their 7th guy way back in 89th and I don't know if they held anybody out or if Stogsdill was loafing or if he was coming back from some problem, but they absolutely won't be near the top 10 with their 5th that far back (47th here).
yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
Abbey D'Agostino puts 14 seconds on the field in the last K? Impressive. Darkhorse for nationals, for sure. Could win it all.
anyone know why Korir walked at the end?

Not quite a dark horse any more (which is a complement for a freshman, and who thought she would be the frosh at NCAAs that people would be talking about).
