so a lack of calories makes it a poor choice, but running 15 miles on an empty stomach isn't? where are your calories coming from if you're not eating? oh, right, stored in the form of fat, glycogen, and protein. gels have about 100 cal in them, making them good for about a mile from caloric energy standpoint, yet posters on this thread have mentioned taking a gel and hammering away.
i too prefer an empty stomach, which is why i'm asking about this because it's such a small volume. usually i drink 16-20 oz of black coffee 60-90 min before workouts, that's a fair bit of volume to down and then go sloshing out the door because i'm not waking up at 3:30AM just to get my coffee fix.
