Father Figure,
I'm sorry. I did not mean that you specifically were jumping ugly on her, that part of my response was to some of the others on the thread.

Word.
I agree with you for the most part. I think what she did is a hell of a lot healthier than what most women do during their pregnancies.
I just shudder to think about what could have happened if something went wrong. I guess that is life, though.
I worked a water station at New York in 2010 and the water stations are slippery for the masses (cups, etc.). I personally saw two people fall right in front of me at two different times - can't say I typically see two car accidents in a three hour time period.
And to the point made that this is not what the medics are looking for - this is right on point. Apparently now there will be additional training for volunteers and the medical teams for extremely unusual circumstances such as women running marathons in hot weather conditions on the day they will give birth to a child. You can now officially expect anything in a race.
Thanks to my Mom for not running a marathon with me in her womb in 80+ degree heat - this is utterly ridiculous. I am almost more concerned by the people defending her actions - this was an extremely selfish act on her part.
Haven't you people ever heard stories about pregnant women working in the fields, giving birth and going on working?

My aunt ran a marathon while 6 months pregnant, much to the astonishment of many people in the family. She had no complications and a seemingly healthy baby. Sadly, the child showed signs of severe mental retardation within a few years. No particular reason to think it is related, but I'd hate to wonder the rest of my life.
Yes, because clearly correlation=causation. That's how we got into all this bullshit about vaccines causing autism. You see, there are these things called genes, and sometimes there are mutations--that's likely what caused your niece or nephew's intellectual disability. Certainly not the mom exercising. No reason to wonder about that.
The fact that women give birth in areas while working in fields is such an illogical argument that it does not actually warrant a reply. So if a drug user gives birth to a healthy child, is that enough for you to condone drug use while pregnat as well? Most would call that lucky as opposed to a sound decision.
Did she consult her physician in the day or two leading up to the race - the media is unclear about this.
I am an unabashed liberal who falls very clearly on the side of a woman's right to choose, etc., but this is outside those paremeters.
The point above being that this person had a choice to make while someone working in a field to earn money to keep her children nourished might not. She chose to not waste the entry fee.
We have official ratified that her baby is the youngest to ever run a marathon. Even though he was still in the womb, for technical purposes, we are listing the age at 0 days.
...put her child at risk for her vanity

So . . . if she had her baby killed, that would have been fine, but running a marathon while pregnant is just over the top?

You just got called out, son.
This whole argument over wether or not she was endangering the baby is stupid. If she wanted to kill the fetus by hitting herself with an axe while running a marathon, it is her right to do so. Read some Supreme Court decisions if you think otherwise.
Now, if every part of the baby had exited the mother and then he died, that is a different story.
So-called "Pro-Lifers" have no grasp of reality.

She was 39 weeks pregnant. My god that's almost 10 months. I had no idea pregnancy's actually last normally last 40 weeks.
But you did know that pregnancy's usually last 9 months, right? Approximately 4.3 weeks/month, not 4 weeks/month. 39 weeks is almost 9 months, not 10. Everything's normal.
39 weeks is just over 9 months (273+ days)...I don't think that changed the dynamics much. It's still very late either way you look at it.

As a runner and maternal/fetal health specialist, here's my two cents:
The real story is not how some healthy mom ran/walked a 6.5 hour marathon-- it's that the majority of pregnant women in the US start out their pregnancies overweight, go on to develop gestational diabetes during their pregnancy and end up needing costly c-sections. These moms will continue to be overweight long after the birth and have repeat c-sections. They are slowly killing themselves and raising your health care costs.
THAT'S what should be causing an uproar on the morning news shows!!
That's nothing. I once ran an entire 10k without my Fuel Belt.

You cannot call out fat lazy people like that. Someone might get offended.

This record WILL NOT be ratified by the IAAF since the baby was a girl and there were men in the race.
