Your football analogy, besides being cruel to a Gopher fan,is strange. I do come from a different era, but I was trained to go 100%, especially at an important meet such as this. i wasn't at the meet in Madison, but it appears that the Badgers were more concerned about how great they looked at the finish than running all out. The Gophers came to Madison to RACE, and I realize they are not in the class of the Badgers this year, but I like Mead "collapsing" after the finish, and placing 5th, He didn't let up and preen at the finish line. It will pay off, I believe, at Big Tens and NCAAs. By the way, I certainly understand the mindset at Big Ten Indoor Track (e.g.) , where team tactics make for winning mile times that are pathetically slow. I think that is different than this. The Badgers' running all out wouldn't have affected the scores that much, as you state in your 80-0 football analogy. I actually wish the Badgers well AFTER Big Tens and hope they can win it all at NCAAs. I will also be pulling for Hassan and the Gophers.
I also found your comment at the end to be bizarre, to say the least. I do in fact coach (at the High school level), and I have never had a problem with an AD hiring me. It was strange that you would project such a "theory" about ADs!
Maybe this is off point, but Regionals and Nationals are 10k. Nice to see there is something left in the tank.
Steve, maybe the Badgers were sending a message to the other teams in the Big 10 (particularly Indiana). That message "We pack well".
Wisco easily won the team race at this, their own Invite, so maybe this was a prelude to the Conference meet....they may run the same way there...forsaking individual glory.
Steve, how say u?

Thanks for the videos
Here's some food for thought for the LV discussion:
Is he just wearing dumb looking socks, or are his ankles/achilles' wrapped?

Lukas always wraps his ankles. He did it during high school, as he has ankles and feet that give him issues. That's the one area that could hold him back, as he starts to ramp up his mileage and gets used to college training and racing.
Flotrack has posted videos of races:
Women's
Men's
Steve, CHILL. The analogy made about the badgers looking good compared to others was meant to suggest that the badgers could possibly do more on an individual level when allowed to. But you had to freak out and defend your boy Hassan as if the poster was attacking Mead. Mead will do well, but he is not invulnerable as you suggest. He is also very lucky to have Indiana in the Big10 as it will force the badgers to focus more on the team title.
Also, I understand what you "grew up doing" (racing all out in middle of the season meets), but that doesnt make you correct(or wrong). I love people who race all out, but maybe there is a bigger goal that mick has for them then blowing their load mid season.
It takes a bigger man to stay with your teammates and watch your nemisis fly by then it does to take off and desert the team plan
your point is well taken. I wasn't at the meet, but the Badgers sure seemed impressive and I'm sure the other Big Ten schools got the "message". (Especially Indiana and the Gophers; I think Minnesota ran well in 7th, beating higher-ranked teams) I can't see anyone beating the Badgers at Big Tens and they have a good chance at winning NCAAs. One thing I remember (way back!) is that when you're winning, you ALWAYS look good....especially on your home course, in front of hundreds of supportive fans. Also, they appeared to be the class of a classy field. They have a great pack of talented runners, so perhaps they can be content to run that way, perhaps forsaking an individual champion.
I see that a lot as a coach in high school cross: so many of the great teams seem to run as a pack without an individual standout. Many times, a team will win a large meet without a guy in the top 10! Conversely, some teams will have a 1-2 finish, but the rest of the team sucks, and the team finishes way back. We always stress to the kids "the power of the pack" A strong pack helps each individual and intimidates the competition. Seems to be working for Wisco.

I talked with Mead briefly; he is glad to have the last couple of years behind him and he looked more like his old self, even if not quite 100% of it.

Yes, I think Hassan is still not quite there, fitness-wise. He's still quite formidable though, and I'm sure that he used this as a test of his fitness. He looked good at Griak a few weeks ago, but still not quite there. The guy has to be hungry after sitting out a year or so.
notre dame?
My big question is what would have happened if OSU was in the race?
How would their team average time, spread and placing compare to UW?
Or to spin this a little, what would UW have looked like if they were at the Chili Pepper festival?
