In the first sentence of that article he states letruns.com not letsrun.com. He must be talking about a different website.

I would say that is in fact pretty typical of a letsrun thread, especially when it comes to some of our special cases like German, Rupp, Hall, Runners World, Galloway and a few others.

I didn't read the thread he referenced, so I don't know if "Not one single comment had anything positive," but it wouldn't be unsual here.

There are some great things that happen on this message board, but the level of uncivility, meanness, racisim, off-topic rants and general trolling are a lot to cut through to find the good stuff.

No you miss the irony.

This place is a crack up, usually not to be taken seriously. The front page is often good, some shoddy journalism aside at times. The news is cutting edge. If you want an update on the latest most recent races, real time or close, this is the place to go.

It's the dark, seamy underside of this forum that's both intruiging and yes, a joke. The anon pot shots at the elites, coaches, etc. e.g., Webb and his hamburgers, German, thin collegiate women. The stuff makes running/sports magazine and website headlines (as in the aforementioned article), and yes there is hurtful sometimes awful stuff (this anon writer does not approve of such postings other than making fun of some of the perpetrators/players from this fiasco of a forum [not to be named because this post will be deleted]), but nobody should take it seriously. It's quite amazing that such banter makes fodder for sports articles.

The article is factually accurate and involves actual reporting with an identifiable reporter whose veracity can be checked and whose reputation is at stake in writing the article. There is a second layer of truthfulness behind the article because it is edited, fact checked, and the veracity of Runningtimes is at stake in publishing the article.

By contrast, legitimate questions about well-known runners go either completely unanswered on this website or answered falsely. There is anonymity protecting the claims made by posters here, there is very little actual reporting done on the website or the message boards, and there is no second layer of truthfulness deriving from editing, fact checking, and letsrun's reputation in publishing. The consequence is that aside from a few good jokes, the website allows random garbage, libel, lies, and groundless speculation to be read by people all over the world and legitimate questions among running fans are rarely answered.

THIS JUST IN: Letsrun IS a joke. RT and RW would never pull the stupid antics the brojos do. Disrespecting elites like Solinsky and Geb? Hell no. It's no wonder the Letsrun guys don't get respect with other journalists.

rodale publishes backpacker magazine, does this make a magazine aimed at camping/hiking/backpacking the same as a magazine aimed at running?

university professors draw their paycheck from the same source. therefore a chemistry professor must be the same as an art professor.

The message board needs a serious makeover. The only reason I still come on here is because I feel its (barely) worth going through the 80% bullshit nonsense posts to find the 20% useful information.

All users should be required to log-in with a registered username before making any posts. This would allow some form of moderating to be done and greatly reduce the number of trolls. Time wasters could simply be banned.

Also would be cool if we could create polls and post pics but with this being Letsrun.com I won't hold my breath any improvements any time soon.

If he is talking about another website, the same people must post to it, that post here. I thought it was a pretty accurate description of what you might find here when talking about one of the elite runners.

Actually they sold Backpacker a couple of years ago. They do publish the egregious Men's Health and Women's Health, plus Organic Gardening for hippies.

ah, did not realize they did that. the covers and layout look similar so i assumed they still published them. plus the recycling of articles every 3-4 mos.

It's pretty rich how everybody is always so self-righteous and disgusted with Letsrun message boards, yet they keep reading them. Personally I find them very entertaining. Sure there are occasional rude comments, but who would be offended by such? Only a really insecure person.

Most people gossip and speculate. BFD, what's the harm in speculating why someone might not be running well? It's all talk, no worse than you might hear on sportstalk radio or overhear at the coffee shop. I don't see how talking about why so and so isn't running well, or whether or not they might be on the juice, is a problem.
