Sorry to hear R.E.M. is finally saying goodbye after 30+ years. Rock wouldn't have been the same without them. Any favorite memories/songs? I saw them in Mpls in '88 with Robyn Hitchcock & the Egyptians opening. The highlight was when Bob Mould came out for the encore, not long post-Husker but well before "Workbook." Good memories.
Yeah all of my memories are of them sucking balls and having a loud mouthed annoying and opinionated singer. So yeah, good riddance.

One of those bands that somehow caught on with the colllege crowd back in the 80's for some unkown reason - college kids with no music training, because REM blows chunks. Stipe is whining shitcanister.
Saw REM in '85. 10,000 Maniacs warmed up. Didn't quite know what to expect, since their music wasn't necessarily shiny and happy. Turned into a two hour dance party. Great time. Played Everly Brothers for the encore.
Definitely will miss them. But I've missed them for 15 years since all but Accelerate have sucked in recent years.
This seems to be such a non-story. Basically they're saying they won't make any more new music. Fine. I actually like a couple of their songs (was a college kid in the 80s), but the fact remains that at any time (and they almost for sure will do this) they could reform and do a tour. 5 years from now, 10 years from now, 15 years from now...new tour playing their hits to people from my generation who grew up with them in college.

My favorite band of all time, but the fact is, they haven't really put out anything relevant since the mid-90s. Accelerate was tremendous, but their other stuff has been hit/miss...more miss.
Saw them in '99 in St. Paul, MN. Played at Midway Stadium and the show ended as a thunder storm began. Will never forget that!

As for the band, I figured that they had "said goodbye" years ago.
REM's Radio Free Europe was one of the most important songs of the 1980s. In 1981, when it was released, the pop music world was recovering from disco and headed towards industry dominated post-disco pop. In 1981, the hits were songs like "Bette Davis Eyes", "endless Love" and "keep on loving you". Radio Free Europe was completely unlike anything out there and basically planted the seed that would become alternative rock/indy rock. It also breathed fresh life into the college music scene at a time when big studios were dominating the music scene with carefully manicured pop superstars and supergroups. Of course, REM couldn't continually repeat the fresh, groundbreaking sound of Radio Free Europe, and eventually grew into a very different pop act than what they were in 1981. And saying that they have broken up is really a misnomer. They have retired. But for those of you trashing them because you don't like "Shinny Happy People" or some of the unrecognizable last albums, take a listen to Radio Free Europe. Chances are your favorite band has.

The voice of their lead singer is really annoying. Their riffs are okay at best.
Saw them in concert eight years ago and they were surprisingly good and danceable, especially when you have a hot blond in a leopard-print thong to grind up against
