The awards announcer called her run as the second fastest by an American woman this year. 71:04 is moving for a debut. Is the being coached or is she self coached as it says she coaches at Ithaca college herself?

She runs for Stotan Racing, a team sponsored by Nike and coached by Bill and John Aris. She ran a very good Boilermaker and 5k this summer too.
1500 school record a year ago at SU, moves to the half a year later and qualifies for the trials with the second fastest time run in this year by an American. That is some damn impressive sh**. I will be following her in Houston.

The article is slightly misinformed-- Maegan was a volunteer GA for the IC mens distance guys last track season, but when she joined Stotan it took enough of her time that she's not currently coaching there.
As mentioned, she's a 4:22 1500 runner from Syracuse. Her improvement has been rather rapid since joining the Arises...if you look at her race results, she was always very good, but nothing indicative of this kind of time. Pretty astounding.
above post seems correct.
look for a piece on her in Ithaca's Imprint Magazine (online magazine from IC) in coming weeks.
she rocked NYS at JFK HS.
Bill Aris = money
Her teammate Brad Miller was 13th American at the CVS 5k Champs in Providence this weekend. Mixed it up with some good pros.
And yes Bill Aris is money. Not very surprised he was able to get her to improve so quickly. He does it at all levels. Absurd.

The awards announcer is WRONG.
regardless, it's still fast. Her improvement rate at the longer distances may well leave her as a top marathon contender in the US before long. Houston Trials will be an interesting debut, though I don't necessarily expect to be left in awe there.
As mentioned, Houston is no sure thing for Kara. Davila, as sure as you can get, but too many on the horizon including Krifchin, like LewyB before her who few put in the top 3.

This isn't about Kara. I'm not sure what the insistence is with trolling about Kara's chances. Even if Kara Goucher doesn't make the Olympic Marathon, I'd bet the farm she'll comfortably destroy Maegan Krifchin. No offense meant to Maegan, of course, who is running very, very well, but Kara Goucher is a 2:25 marathoner who has been on the podium at NY, and has finished 3rd in the World Championships 10k.
Maegan Krifchin is a 4:22 1500, 16:24 5k girl who happens to have found her niche at the longer stuff with a 71:04, which is not even CLOSE to Kara's level (yet).
Silliness.
A quick look at Krifchin's distance results show an incredible improvement.
About 12 months ago, she ran 54:41 for 15k @ the Run into Buffalo.
This July, she ran 52:24 to finish top american woman at the Boilermaker and win mad cash.
A week or two ago she ran 52:23 (stotan's fb calls it "tempo effort") at the same Run into Buffalo.
At philly, she goes through 15k in 50:36 (according to Stotan's info), en route to a 71:04.
That's what I call an improvement curve.
should read: coached by bill AND john aris, or john AND bill aris....makes no difference. we work together with all members of our sr group. actually, john has been the hands on coach at our sr practices while i continue to direct the hs program. we work together in all aspects of sr runners development and plan the training programs for each runner in much the same way. re maegan, a nice breakthrough obviously, as we look and plan to the future. she has been an exemplary member of our group in every way and we look forward to its continuance. nike sponsorship of our endeavor has been an integral part of our success and is of course much appreciated!
respectfully,
bill aris
The Women's trials will be very competitive. The "heirs apparent" (Kara, Shalane and Desi) will look to run a tactical race to avoid injury. This will mean that runners like Maegan, Boulet, Rothstein, Hastings, Grandt, Moody and MacGregor will be in the mix up to the end. Basically, anyone who shows up ready to run 2:28-30 will have a shot.
Congratulations to you, John, and your athletes. Are you at liberty to say whether Maegan is planning to run the Olympic Marathon Trials or does she have other objectives at this time? I assume Trials are Joslyn's primary objective at this point.
This last comment was not made by a Stotan runner, with certainty. It is not our way. Finances are only part of it. The best runners in the world work off of far less financially than the best in this nation. Keep working hard, put in the time, things will happen. To answer from the inside out, no we do not have insurance, nor housing, all of our runners work full time, or pursue grad school degrees...on the issue of housing and full time work/school endeavors: we wouldn't have it any other way.
The USATF link to current US Trials qualifiers, via the half marathon. Krifchin's time is in fact the second fastest performance at the distance in 2011. This is some debut. Faster than Molly Pritz ( by a second), behind only a few Olympians folks. Take a look at the names. Girl is the real freakin deal.

as i noted above, $$ and support are integral to any program’s continuance and success, as is having athletes of the right mind, heart, and of course potential, as well as effective coaching of the same type. won’t get into the details of our situation (in our relative infancy of 1 1/2 yrs into it, by the way) other than what is on our webpage, as that kind of info is both company private and specific to the individual members of our group. if you are asking from the perspective of an athlete interested in joining our group please feel free to contact us via our webpage e-mails. won’t address this stuff here.
finally, while $$/support is essential these days, you can’t serve 2 masters. one must take priority. in our approach, it is development toward fulfilling potential that rules. $$ supports that pursuit, not the other way around.
live simply. be humble. work hard. run strong. race fast.
might sound corny to some, but it works (for us at least).

Davila and Goucher apparently did not race the distance in 2011?? Or did not race the distance faster than this. Unless, of course the database is incorrect. Also possible given USATF. Looks from the list that Goucher and Davila ran faster, but in 2010. Ranks Krichin 6th in the nation at the distance going into the Trials (thru September of 2011). Also saw that she led 8 women across the line to the trials on Sunday. This is all very good for the sport, and yes a bit scary to be talking about a new comer with such a powerful debut. Not near the best of the best (Goucher, Shalane), but closer than most others. One off day at the trials by one of the big three, and this chick could most definitely sneak in. Should be talked about, time is for real, girl is for real.
