Amazing what difference it makes to be part of a sport that requires a TON of money, and only has white people involved.
This is the same kind of nonsense we see with swimming.
Where would LV rank in the world for his 5K? Behind a bunch of Africans.

And what about Tony Smoragiewicz taking third with about equal bike and run times as Lukas. Pretty cool stuff. Props to both of them.
I'm not if anyone else even noticed this kid with all the Verzbicas hype. He was also 3rd at footlocker as a junior last year!

This is nice to read. I had a sour taste in my mouth about LV when he won that XC race by walking across the line. Bravado is good, but respect the race and the other racers.
Another great part of the story is a good prognosis for Kevin McDowell. I've talked to him at a couple of high school XC meets and he came across as a super nice guy. Good news for sure.

It's not where he would rank in an whole other country. It's where he ranks in the U.S., which rich white kids dominate. And yes, considering the Africans dominance, it is quite odd that Africans in America are not setting the same standards.(Please don't say african-americans don't run distance because any urban school in America would show many runners left behind) This is the same thing that happened with Alann Webb, his father was rich, he switches from one of those rich swimming sports you mentioned, sideskirts a few high school rules, hires a coach and becomes a legend. I really hope you are not supposing that guys like Lukas and Webb are on equal playing ground with African-Americans, or the majority of middle-class individuals, in America. If so, you are an idiot.

how many kids can afford to do triathlons in high school. lukas ran with no competition and as soon as he gets here to ncaa's me and a lot of others are going to make a fool out of him in the 10k.
Please. I'd bet that if you were to race Lukas in a 10k right now, he'd probably WALK the last 1000 meters and still leave you in the dust

He continues to follow a path that he started several years ago when he was only about 15 and decided that he would do it his own way in running, even when his own way involved training for a triathalon.
Regardless of his future results, he has set a very high bar for future HS runners to set their own path.
Winner!
He should go pro in the Tri or cycling way more money...He will make more than just running.
Yes because money is the only thing that matters in life.

Walking across the line is what you do in triathlon races. He did it as a tribute to the other sport he loves. Anyway, he won. He could have turned around and walked backwards across the line. Showing off or celebrating at the line is not disrespecting the race or racers if you're far enough ahead that you don't interfere with the others' race, who cares what the winner does before or after the line?
Way to go Super V" !!!!!!! They may have an edge in the water and on the bike just a bit...... but there ain't no way in hell their gonna take your A$$ on the rode!!! HA!!! Keep in going buddy and show'em what you got at the college level nowl. You know a lot of dudes are shak'in in their boots. You'll smok'em all at NCAA's! Good luck!!!!
Anyone know the distances on the 3 disciplines for this event. Unable to find it in a timely manner. Thanks.
750m swim, 20km bike, 5km run
750m swim
20k bike
5k run
Awesome race by Tony as well. Hopefully 2 guys on the podium will get more kids interested in the sport. We didn't have much of a showing in the u23 or pro race.

Regardless of the $$$ factor, the kid likely has more of a chance of an Olympic medal at the tri than in any running event. As I said, he could do tri's in college and still have an outdoor running season. I think his cross-training has helped him build an enormous base while avoiding injury, which should be instructive for all runners. All of the physical therapists I ever encountered all said that they see far more injuries in those who don't cross train versus those who do. Staying healthy is the top priority to maintain longevity.
Lukas, the weather sucks in Oregon for most of the year.

Luke was my son's teammate in junior high, nice and classy kid then, still is now! So excited to see what he does in the coming years! Go Luke!!!
Considering he specializes in sprint triathlons the first three positions are going to be slitting hairs. But a
a congrats to Lukas he's just like a big shepherd pup.
If you're interested in an autograph from Lukas Verzbicas, email me at
He will come back to running, you'll see.
