I have spent a long time (3 years) injured without ever fully getting back to a point where I can run consistently. I ran all through high school and was never injured, ran consistently in my first year at college and then I had achilles/calf issues that have persisted ever since. I have sought NUMEROUS therapies, some providing more help than others. My hope is that I can get some advice on what I may not have tried and what the chances of me running again look like.
I started by having extreme sharp pain in my achilles consistent with tendonitis..this had happened a few times in high school but I had always been able to take a few days off and be perfectly good to go. This time around was different, I took a week off, ran , no better, then I would take a month off, two days into running the sharp pain returned, eventually this cycle continued with taking more and more time off while I would think that doing so would allow it to fully heal, it never did. The first specialist I saw was an orthopedic doctor, he prescribed me some stretches and some pain pills (like that was going to get to the root of it) which resulted in little success. I saw another orthopedic doctor and had an MRI but it didn't show anything terrible..which was a common comment from all the people I saw..is that relative to how bad achilles injuries can be, my tendon did not look that bad...no significant tear, nodules in the tendon, or rupture...just very tender and would always flare into sharp pain when I would do active things.
Subsequently, in the last three years I have seen two orthopedic doctors who really didn't do much to help, a PT who did some massage and ultrasound regularly which didn't do that much, a prolotherapist who did injections which helped minimally, and a chiropractor who did ART I saw consistently for 9 months...ART helped the most out of anything and allowed me to start running more than I had been able to, but I still was having issues..the tendon started feeling better but my problem now has been extreme calf tightness in my mid to upper-outer calf area...I stopped ART because it felt like I had reached a plateau with it. I also saw a massage therapist who worked on my calves hoping that would solve this tightness issue. Also, I have used a foam roller consistently. I am still only able to run very rarely and for short durations as my calf gets too tight to continue and slight inflammation of the tendon.
Can you tell me if there is anything I haven't tried? It seems crazy that it has gone on this long and I never saw myself having to deal without being able to run...especially since my achilles issues weren't that severe compared to a rupture or tear...The only things I feel like I haven't tried and should think about are Graston and A-STYM...any advice or experience with these and other modalities would be great to know!! Thanks!
