Seeing as how we like to speculate about everyone under the sun using drugs, it got me thinking about my hero Haile and the Ethiopians.
Ironically, I have many acquaintances from Ethiopia and I am pre-disposed to thinking that all of the Athletes must be clean because I like the people I know so much.
That being said, I fear that because there is no mad scientist like Doctor Rosa dressing them up in neon and sending them out to pillage the roads, that they appear to be beyond reproach.
I have never even seen an anecdote about an Ethiopian using drugs here, which is saying something. Furthermore, I have never heard of an Ethiopian getting busted. Beyond the occasional smart-assed comment about Haile's 10k record there is not much action on the topic.
Therefore, one might assume that they just work really hard and that they peak for the right events as a result of a very tightly run althetics federation.
The latter factor is my concern and the basis for starting this "inquiry". While I have never been to Ethiopia, I did live in Russia. In the building I lived in Moscow, I was one of the few non-Ethiopians!
Up to the 90's the Russian government had invested enormous amounts of money in Ethiopia, starting in the 70's when Communist dissidents ousted King Selassie in a Soviet backed revolt [which was ironcially triggered by a riot at a fashion show put on by the US Peace Corps,... but anyway].
In fact, the world's single largest collection of Soviet military hardware currently sits in the mountains above Addis. The guys in my building went to school with me so that they could read the manuals for the missile launchers.
Anyway, here is the question: if Russia had invested millions in various programs designed to promote Communist cultural expansion in Africa, would they not have implemented the Eastern Bloc sports policy as well? They certainly did in every other country that they made similar "investments" in [E.Germ., Romania, Czech, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia, Hungary, Cuba...]
Something worth thinking about. Offers a reasonable theory as to the big-meet success. They would not be the first country that learned how to win based on the Soviet system!
This is all speculative and I would value the opinion of anyone who has knowledge of the Ethiopian system, or has ever visited there......
