What is you're 1500/mile pr? What kind of mileage do you do? Have you run a half marathon?

1500 pr is 3:44.98

mileage was stated, varies, but usually around 110-130, i held steady 120 for 1 1/2 - 2 months, then dropped it down to 105-110 after feeling really tired for that stint, I'm back up to 115's-125's right now.

I haven't run a half marathon, though I plan to.

Give the marathon a shot. With your good speed, and distance background I don't see why you couldn't put down a 2:13 or so. Sponsorship will follow after a performance like that. Go for it man.

Hey, Thanks man. I figured I'd go for the marathon after my track 'career' (however limited), but now I'm starting to rethink just when i should go for a more long distance orientated race. I would need a coach / or specific training for such an undertaking though. Which is were I'm at!

yeah man, you have to ask yourself what you are really training for.

Seems like you have done a good whack of mileage for a long time and ended up having a solid 800m, but a comparatively weak 5km/10km... have you tried a good solid 90-110miles programe targeting 1500m??

Right now you are definitely an 800m runner.

U sound like u have the exact same credentials as mike kilburg... Although I doubt he can bust a 1:47....

You have options, club northwest or zap or asics aggies will take you and pay some minimal expenses. OR you could join OTC and run for their B squad, give yourself one year to improve enough in the 800, 1500, or 5k etc... And if you improve you'll have a full ride via their elite squad (ala symmonds, Lear, ritz, solinsky... And many more.)

Give it one more year before you go the way of the hobby jogger and move up to the marathon, no sense in doing that unless you're guaranteed a huge payday like Ritz or Hall. If you really want to be a marathon hobby jogger go join the snails at Brooks hansons.

Minnesota eh? You're just a tad slower than the guys at Team USA Minnesota. It's a small program, and I am not sure if they have any spots open, but they are trying to do a lot for up-and-coming people such as yourself even if they can't accommodate them on the team itself. I think you'd do well to get a coach. You may think you've maxed out your training, but talking to a coach who can help you work on things you've neglected might give you the bump you need to make it to the next level. So you've been running huge mileage, but maybe you need to work on speed? Or strength? Or technique? Or high-end endurance? Or race-specific stuff? Etc. Your range is quite impressive--1:47 is nearly fast enough for some very big meets, but your longer distance times are great too, especially compared to other 800 guys (I once was in an 8k race with 1:46 guy Tyler Mulder and he only ran 26:45 or so!). If you focused on shorter stuff it'd also free up some time, too. I had a friend in college who has seen a lot of improvement post-collegiately by hiring a local college coach to srite him a training and racing schedule.

Try bumming around the local running shops to see if you can get a job to pay the bills if you want to keep it going. Funny story, Running Room in St. Paul just lost an employee...he was caught jacking off in front of a customer! But places like Run n' Fun, TC Running Co, and some of the other stores are great about helping guys like you get a part-time job or something, just to make ends meet. Even if they don't have openings, they might be able to get you in touch with someone else who'd be willing to help you out. The owners are also very, very connected in the running community.

As for finding a coach, I can't think of any off the top of my head, but if anyone could help you find one, it might be Charlie Mahler. He's one of the most-connected guys in the MN running scene and he runs

Mulder is a 1:44 guy, not 1:46. With the speed to split 45, it makes sense he isn't smashing 8k's.

Well when I raced him he was still a 1:46 guy! Thanks for pointing that out though

Pray for slow tachical races in longer distances, where you speed will allow you to beat people with much faster pr's.

Very unusual mix of training and PRs. VERY few 800m guys run as much as you, but pretty much every 1500m guy with an 800m PR 100mpw for months, you're well prepared to drop the mileage and increase the intensity of your training while focusing on 800m-5000m. I would try and figure out a way to give things one last try for indoors, but it's hard to give specific advice. I would also try talking to smaller training groups (ZAP etc rather than NIKE).

Should have stuck it out as an actuary.

hesch (somerandomdude) wins races all over the place and i'm pretty certain he doesn't have 147 speed. you could win a lot of races in a kick with that kind of speed. find a road race and get a check, or three. and drop your mileage, like someone else said....

Stick it out and don't give up on running pro! David Torrence had similiar mid-d prs as you while he was a struggling sub-elite. He struggled pretty hard to make ends meets there for awhile, but he stuck with it and now look at him. I'd say you have a pretty good chance at a similar breakout. I might even go as far as to say with your stronger long distance background and mileage that you might possibly be better if things fall in place for you.

I had a similar (slightly faster) 1500 pr, a much slower 800, and a much faster 5k and 10k pr than you coming out of college. (by the way, don't list a pr unless it's on the track, no one cares about road or cross country prs)

I ran for three years post collegiately trying to make a run of it. Worked 20 hours a week, trained really hard, worked with a well respected coach and some really good runners. In three years I made less than 15k in total compensation from running, this includes prize money, comped entry fees, clothes, shoes, travel money. I also never improved after college.

So, here's the bottom line. If you're looking to make money from running, you're looking at being a minimum of an A Standard athlete. Those guys usually don't have to work, usually. If you're a B standard athlete, you'll probably get more help than I did, but you will need a second job to make ends meet. Outside of that, there's very little assistance. Distance running is a very top heavy sport compensation wise in the US. If it's about making some money for you the guy who said shoulda stuck with the actuary route was right.

If you just want to run and see ifyou can do your best, find a group of good athletes and a good coach and do what it takes to train with them and see what happens. If you happen to hit it big, great, but you will likely never make money running.
