I honestly don't see how Symmonds could have medaled. The four ahead of him are all better, smarter runners.

top four runners can split 45 or so in the 4x400m.

Yeah, but Symmonds is American. Americans are special (haven't you heard?). Therefore it is only by a freak set of circumstances or an inexplicable tactical error that he did not medal.

I haven't watched the race yet, but the time and the placing confirm that Yego was never really a threat, and that he's definitely not in his best shape.
Great race. Looking forward to London! I think Borzakovskiy has a shot next year.

Let's stop with the what ifs for Symmonds. Is he any better than the 5th-best 800m runner in the world? NO, NO, and NO!!! He got the place he deserved and maybe even a little better than he deserved. He doesn't have any more talent people, he's a good runner, consistently around the 5th or 6th or 7th best 800m runner in the world. That's all he is, and it's all he will ever be. Just look at him physically compared to Rudisha or Kaki or even Borza for that matter. He has gotten A LOT out of himself at this level. In fact, he may be one of the greatest success stories ever on the world stage. But he will NEVER be any better than he is now, and there will always be 5 or so 800m runners better than him. We need to appreciate him for that, and stop the what ifs.

Symmonds ran a perfect race until 180m left--letting that guy come by, clip him, and box him was inexcusable....he should have moved up there--the pace wasn't that fast. He looked a bit flat too. Too bad,
Nick was NO going to beat Yuri, and Yuri ran a poor race.

Symmonds did have his patented 300m-all-out kick
I'm so tired of kicks being called "trademark" or "patented." EVERY RUNNER KICKS. In the 800 kicks generally just mean that runner slowed down the least.
Also, the F word is an important part of our language and my speech. It should be permitted.
Rudisha played with them. Quick first 200 of 23,8 to get the lead and stay out of trouble, then slowing it down on the second 200, 27,5, splitting 51,3 for 400m and then picking it up on the third 200, 26,6, and then picknick it up à little bit more for the final 200, 26,0 giving him splits of 51.3 and 52.6. Kinda like Kipketer did at 1997 worlds.
Borza ran very smart and put himself in contention already at the bell. There is someone to learn from NS.
Gee, another Oregon runner can't live up to the hype of the fanboys. Who'd have think it?
Truth is, USA is doing great--on track for 30+ medals--and the Oregon distance runners are on track for another big, fat zero for another championships.
Can the hype, the excuses, the bullshit.
If he really wants gold, Ashton Eaton should wise up, move to Texas or California to train, and get away from that den of mediocrity.

They've already got two.
Touché!

Symmonds looks great until the race actually happened with 200m to go.
Symmonds needs to develop a kick like Borzakovsky.
This ^ is exactly right. Almost to the point of being brilliant.
Maybe if he didn't go straight to dead last every single damn race. He makes traffic for himself and he's not gonna beat these guys coming from behind in lane two in a world championship.
Who knows what he could have run so far in his career if he didn't race like a complete pvssy. And I'm a symmonds fan...
That said I think he gets at least 4th if he doesn't get clipped and held that position through the turn.
Nick's post race comments are here:
Same thing happened to Gary Reed in Beijing. So heart breaking to see a guy have to stop on the turn to find a position.
Luck ? its not Vegas. He has been to big dance a few times now , this is being stupid and out of position. Coach also deserves a kick in the ass.
You are right about Borza going out too fast - but that is what also 'killed' the chances of Amman, the new Ethiopian find.
It is very rare to have a winner in any middle distance race who leads at a fast pace from the gun. Rare, but not impossible.
I was hoping for a medal for Kzcot, the Polish runner, but he was not far off....Lewandowski is also so strong. Nice to see two Poles in the final.
Funny to think that Cram was running 1.42/43 some 30 years ago. Times in the 800 over this period of time have not improved significantly.
