have just read that mcnamara won $3000 after running a 3.54 min mile. that is ridiculous compared to other sports. in order to perform such a run you have to be extremely talented and put in very very hard work. $3000 is really nothing...I would say $15000 would be more reasonable...it proves to me time after time that runners (distance) are very low paid...what do you think?

That's more than $45,000/hour. How many sports pay more than that for guys not at the very top of the profession?
well you cant really count it like that. money per minute racing/competing. can you? could you imagine the ratio a soccer player has then? i´d say being a runner is a 24 hour job 365 days a year. still, i think 3.54 min for one mile is top performance, so i consider him belonging to the top elites of his sport. maybe i am wrong but i have some knowledge about the sport and just because he isnt very famous among the public doesnt mean he isnt top. where do you draw the line anyway?
Runners don't make money for other people. Big name sports bring a lot of money in, runners don't.
If you could spell "paid" correctly, you might make a few more $$$.

If you think a large number of pros are "making a living" off a shoe contract you are wrong. Only very elite runners make more than $15,000/year from their shoe contracts. I know people with Olympic 'A' standards that aren't even making that much.

They earn what the market dictates. NFL'ers make a lot of money because there is a lot of demand to watch them perform.

Yeah, Americans and race sponsors don't really care to watch a bunch of no name East Africans, with names they can't pronounce/remember and little to no English, duke it out at Boston or other majors races. The media doesn't care either, such that Boston is no longer televised and diehards have to pay online to watch crappy coverage. Bad for race sponsorship too.
How to remedy this? Make the fields American-only. Much more exciting, creates American super-heroes (like 25-35 years ago), and provides more financial support for a larger American talent pool. More American talent sticking with the sport and training as full-time athletes (like most Africans) will make us more competitive with the Africans too. Having them part of the field has done nothing to improve Americans, NOR the demand by the public.

The winner of the PGA Championship, the best of the best, made $1,445,000 after playing 72 holes or roughly $20,000/hole. At ~5 holes/hr, that's going to be ~$100,000/hr. 2nd place was about 60% of that or ~$60k/hr. 3rd place - ~$40k/hr.
I would suggest to you that finishing 3rd place at the PGA championship is a far greater accomplishment than winning the Falmouth road mile even if the time is 3:54.
Are you going to a cut a check to pay them what you deem is the proper amount? Or maybe McNamara should fall back on some posh easy work that makes a ton of money like coal mining.
Running needs more investors. It also needs more guys speaking out for it, like Wheating, Manzano, Rowbury, Lagat, Centro.
those young guys need to stand up, the teams need to unite. The ncaa teams need to unite and spread their sport and also battle like hell when it comes time.
there needs to be more writeups in the local newspaper. Someone needs to take this sport to the next level! Flotrack is doing a great job, they could even take it to another level. We could make this sport explode overnight!
