???
...Come to Russia and try to survive for 4K-7K per year
Its the Letsrun paradox! Half of us make 500k a year, the other half of us look down our noses at anyone who eats more than 50 cents of rice and beans for a meal.
On thread - I actually only make 28k a year doing research at a University. There are perks - good cheap health insurance, and 8% employer retirement match.
However, the one thing I DO spend money on is food. I love good food and it makes me happy! I purchase a diverse variety of produce/meats, enjoy craft beer, and enjoy eating out (more the ~$10 thai dish or burger though, not expensive restaurants).

Where did this post come from?????!!!
Was just reading a post a few days ago where all you guys were blabbing how you and your spouse each make $250 K and are watching every penny and questioning whether or not you can afford a home? Is this the wealth gap in America everyone speaks of?? I must be missing the part where the experts on here say if your net worth is under $3 M by age 30 you are in trouble financially.
$18,000 in 2011 when this thread started would be the equivalent of about $21,100 today according to a few online sources. Hard to get by on that amount today unless you live out in the middle of nowhere.
Do you like tacos? If so, I think we used to talk, long time ago, when I was running well. If not, I think you may have moved on from your work.
9 years ago. Since then inflation.
Hmm, 21000/year is just barely doable in my city, but you'll always be on the edge of homelessness. Not having a car is key.
Take home around $1100/month after taxes/health care.
Rent -- lowest imaginable would be $500, but more like $800 for a cheap room in an apartment. Maybe you can beat this if sharing a room, but that's typically illegal with occupancy limits.
Food -- $130 (30/wk)
Public transportation: $55 (bus pass - you can't afford the subway pass)
Phone - $30
Utilities - $40
Incidental stuff - $50
Total = $805 - 1105
