Chanelle Price will be back on track.....she is a competitor. Keep your head up CP!
A similar shock happened at UCLA two years ago and they have been in rebuilding mode... it hurts, it takes time... some great things will evolve but growing pains are realistic.
The truth is: all of these programs are a business. Everyone in charge is stretched to their limit and unless they thrive on that type of life... it is a pressure cooker.

Thanks for the post Joetta
Pressure cooker? That's of the coaches' own making. Keep Watts, give him some money, let him sign some good runners, and tell him to win, and he'd have done it. That would keep valuable alums in the loop, too. Do it this way and you lose all those guys.
Wow. It's funny how angry alumni and outsiders will comment with little facts from the inside. Just angry washed up people sitting at their computers. As an insider I will tell you a few things. The athletes that watts coached who are under jj now are very happy with him. Coach watts did nothing with so many 800 runners. Apparently his coaching style has changed greatly over the years. Maybe he has forgotten how to coach middle distance runners (if that is at all possible... He was getting old). What ever the reason, he bought in many sub 1:50 guys and did nothing with them. I have heard 3 guys who came in as sub 1:50 guys under watts and never improved say that watts "ruined" them. As for coach Elliot. Everyone within the program knew that he was not the coach he used to be and that it was time for him to go. He hardly held an organized practice. He was completely out of it in his last few years at UT. His athletes came to practice when and if they wanted and he did nothing to correct it. He hardly held practice. As for jj not being a good distance coach... I will give you two recent names. Liz Costello, and Jackie aereson. Both recently ran great for jj. He improved costellos 5k/10k prs by great amounts. Some other coach is now taking credit for the work that jj put into Jackie but who cares. She Switched coaches to get a better deal. As for jj living off the performances of his wife and sisters... Shall I mention Nicole cook, phoebe write Sarah bowman... And the up and coming Erica more who he has taken from 2:04 to 1:58 indoor in one year. He has coached more sub 2minute 800 runners than ANY coach in the world! These are just facts from an insider. The people on the outside looking in (including alumni) are just angry because they like watts and he got fired... Well that's life! It's a dog eat dog world. UT track will rise again under jj Clark. It takes time to build program. He has only had one yr with the men's program. Stop the obsession with hating jj and get a life! You are obsessed with him and he is not thinking about you :) Alumni please move on. Watts had his time, so did you. Your turn is over. Move on. If this coaching change is affecting your life, if you are going to bed angry at jj at night, if you think about ways to try to get back at him daily..... Rethink your life and existence!
don't know much about the situation, but i talked to coach watts on the phone a few times a couple years ago when i was thinking about going to tennessee and he was a really nice guy...reading these posts maybe its a good thing i didn't go there
Congrats to the current UT teams success at SEC and NCAA region meets!
Sounds like some freshman's got some sand between their butt cheeks.
How did it work out for Joe Franklin this year under the great 800 training of JJ (soon to be unemployed) Clark? I believe he ran 1:48 in High School. I'll be waiting for his times, hurry back.
This is simply not true. The guys on the team hate JJ. There's rumors circulating that he has one year left to get it together (I've even heard only this year, but that seems unlikely). And believe me, the guys who ran for Watts are counting down the days.
Are you a Tennessess alum? If so, your grammar and spelling make me ashamed to share the same diploma!
who cares about grammer and spelling...this isn't a test or term paper. JJ must go and the whole program is going to need to start from scratch.
1.)JJ is the reason Sarah Bowman is injured
2.)Liz Costello was good before she came to Tenn
3.) Jackie A moved coaches because she didn't like JJ
I'll also state that most of the people on here (and on the outside) aren't arguing that JJ isn't a good women's coach (excluding XC). And to be honest I dont really think they give a shit about the womens program in general. Their upset about the death of the MENS PROGRAM-and the MENS PROGRAMS downfall can be directly link to JJ's inexperience as a MENS COACH. You cant recruit 800m-1000m runners out of high school and train the team at 50-60 miles per-week, with no long runs, and expect to be good in XC. Part of JJ's job is XC and part of the alumni's frustration is the the total lack of importance placed in the Tenn XC program. JJ is good fo two things: 1.) coaching womens 800-1500m runners and 2.) Doing well at Penn Relays.
Totally agree - J.J. is a fine women's coach, although most of his female athletes (at least the mid-distance/distance girls) continually have a scowl on their faces. Perhaps to match J.J.'s continual scowl? Do they give Penn wheels for the most abrasive, arrogant, icy coach in track? Can you imagine what poor Jordan Hasay would be like if she had gone to UTK instead? Her sunny demeanor would transform into constant race face. Good luck Mr. Grinch.

You obviously don't care since you didn't spell grammar correctly. I don't usually comment on things like this, but since I'm a fan of irony, it had to be done.
Discussion on this
Local news is reporting that he will be "evaluated" by Hart at the end of the year.
Coach Clark is a great coach and a great man. Right now, the program is undergoing revitalization. News flash, every program will experience this process. Moreover, he now has a world champion in the 800 meters; in fact, Price is the first American woman to ever to win the 800 indoors. In fact,Coach Clark is man with a great personality, and he also is determined to sculpt young people into formed maxing their athletic and academics potential. Now if you do not have anything nice to say do not say it, your facts are miserably askew.
- Chanelle Price -Alexis Panisse
- Chelsea Blaase - Liz Costello
- Sarah Bowman - Jackie Areson
- Brittney Sheffey - Jerald miles- Clark
- Nicole Cook
- Joetta Hazel
- Phoebe Wright

Please start acting like a grown up. I see you are upset with this guy's quote. In turn, what you said was a very childish thing to say.I would like to say you spend time on your computer blogging about your emotions. Speak with reason, not emotion.
