Ken Olson (spelling?), the distance coach at UK in the 1974-? period had some cutting edge ideas about training. Not sure if Olson was the father of the concept but several UK runners at that time did double workouts with the second run of the day late in the evening before going to bed. This allowed sleeping late in the morning and seemed to remove more of the soreness from hard workouts than an early morning run. Nenow simply continued that type of training. Also the long runs that he did were on killer courses with many very long hills. Nenow ran a form of cruise intervals on these long runs. Not all that different from training that I have observed in the city of the beautiful flower, just about 9,000 feet difference in elevation and 3 mile downhills for speed development.
Here is my little Mark Nenow story:
It was at a little 8k in Irvine in about 1993. I was running for the Snails Pace running team and finishing in the top 5 of most road races. This particular race offered a little money so I thouhgt maybe I could make some?
As we are warming up I notice quite a few guys faster than I am so I know I have some work ahead of me. The race goes off and I am in the top ten. No worries. Well, at about the 1.5 mile mark this little guy who is all legs comes rolling by like he is on a Sunday jog.
Turns out it was Mark Nenow and he ran the first mile with a friend and then proceeded to run up and catch and pass the leaders.
I was new to running and had no idea who he was. I sure did after that race however.
And saying he is all legs is an understatement.
Hey Mark, Your awesome! Come see us sometime cuz
I happened to be the R.D. for that race and working part time at A Snail's Pace. We had an awsome field for a small race. Nenow, Steve Scott, Danny Gozalez, Danny Reid, Gus Quinonez (I think). We offered priems to the first runner to each mile point providing you finished in the top 10. I have a video of the leaders and Mark the whole race. did he ever run a marathon?
I believe he did, good, but nothing spectacular.
Podcast of Interview done in November 2005
Figures. Insecurity?
after listening to the podcast he has run 214 at new york. It seemed like he wasn't the typical American who is world class, as far as training, being self coached. I think it helped him a lot, but probably hurt him in the marathon.
his training sounds like itd be more ideal for the marathon than the shorter events. he probably just ran the marathon when he was past his prime.
Just ran into Mark a few weeks ago...he now works just outside Seattle for Brooks...saw him in a mall, and was pleasantly surprised that someone recognized him!

Even the HS 8:36 record holder has said Salazar wasn't exactly the best teammate in OU. I guess he thought he needed to be like PRE. What a jackmonkey
I'm not sure I understand. Do you mean that he ran the uphills hard, coasted at the top for recovery, then ran downhill hard and again coasted at the bottom for recovery until the next uphill?
