Is it true?
Is it true?
yes
Yes. Not really a surprise though. Just because his dad went to UO doesn\'t mean anything. His dad ran for an all together different program. I think that the major challenge for Martin Smith and the Ducks is competing with Stanford for the in-state recruits. He has done better than Dillenger in this department but has not dominated. Look at all the bloody Oregonians who are kicking ass for Stanford.
Ian Dobson
Jacob Gomez
Jesse Thomas
Grant Robison(says he\'s from Texas but he\'s really from
McMinnville, Oregon. he won something like
7 state titles on the track in Oregon)
plus Lauren Jespersen and J. Chapa coming in
Oregon has these runners from instate that are helping
or should help in the future
Erik Heinonen
Brett Holts
Eric Logsdon
John Lucas
Noel Paulson
plus Alec Wall on the way. It would be huge for them if they could land Galen Rupp(14:56 at the State XC meet on a course that is definately not blazing fast)
Martin has done well on in-state recruits. But could you imagine if you added the Stanford guys from Oregon? They would be natioanl title contenders this year.
Could someone briefly review Chapa's running accomplishments, PR's, etc...
I do not know who he is.
Actually doing a search, it looks like Chapa's a 1:53 / 4:13 / low 15:00's XC type.
That's good...But at Stanford, he may never crack their top guns.
Actually,
I believe he has run as fast as 3:53-3:54 for 1500m. He ran 3:54, I think, at the Oregon state meet in May.
you don't know who juaquin chapa is or Rudy? If you don't know who Rudy Chapa is, well, then you might be a little bit dumb as far as running history. I assume you mean the younger one.
Well, considering that this is a thread about Jaoquin, he was most likely not reffering to Rudy. This younger Chapa is looking good. He is actually developing at a normal rate too. None of this sensational-at-an-early-age stuff only to not do much later on. Rudy was great, but hopefully his boy will be even better and have a better career.
If he is interested in long term development he could not have made a worse choice. The education is awesome. The weather is better. The recruiting is the best. The coaching is the absolute worse. The development does not continue beyond college.
Why did all the great UO runners all end up quitting running before they were like 28 years old? Only Placencia seemed to run for a while.
What was up with that?
Salazar was done when he 25.
What does it say about Smith when he can't land the son of one of Oregon's greatest stars?
Plasencia went to Minnesota. He lived in Eugene when he competed for Athletics West.

Martin is doing a fine recruiting job. He always has. In the Midwest, the best area for distance recruiting, he dominated.
Stanford is the king now. How they can get all of those 9:00-9:10 kids is something no one else does. Its like Smith did at Wisconsin but even on a larger scale.
One thing to consider is landing the instate kid is not usually that easy. Most kids want to leave home and see and experience something different. I know I did. Plus, the kid will get bombarded with talk and attention because of his dad.
Who cares about what the great UO runners of the past did after college. It is a completely different program today. I wouldn't say that it's better, but Martin has only been there for a few years. Stanford is a great recruiting machine. You can't really knock Smith because he didn't land Chapa. Hell, that would be like trashing Wetmore for not getting Hjeny. Stanford gets almost everybody it seems. Only 5 runners count at NCAA's though. I still think Oregon will compete with them the next few years.
