It is important ... finding out the name of the hot pole vault girl, that is.

funny thought--can't say it didn't cross my mind, and i was in the race. another masters competitor not in the race (and before the dq) mentioned this race as a "huge upset," and i had to laugh--i responded "someone has to really give a shit for it to be a 'huge upset.'"
however, it is interesting to see some typical letsrun posters--meaning no reading comprehension skills--get involved with a masters thread, although pointing out the hotness of the pole vaulter is definitely worth noting.
understanding the rule as posted by nyloco: there was undoubtedly justification (not the same as certainty) for the dq, whether or not any of us would have made the call or not. i probably would have done the same as mark, probably equally parts reflex AND keeping "my space"--not to mention that my coach from back in the day would have disowned me for letting someone pass me on the inside. if i got dq'd, as mark did, i'd have to cop to it or at least accept it, as mark did. i haven't talked to nick, but i don't think anyone's questioning mark's ability (which would be foolhardy and absurd) or integrity (i only just met him, but he seems like a genuine character). chalk it up as a lesson learned; i for one will try to keep it in mind next time i find myself in the heat of battle instead of DFL.
that's my story and i'm sticking to it...
From Nick Berra's Blog (2nd place finisher, ultimate winner):
"I am most disappointed that I wasn’t able to race him better the last 100m – I know I only have so many chances to reach certain goals and am fairly sure that had the contact not happened and I didn’t have to badly break stride I would have been much stronger down the final stretch."
He probably feels like it was a legit DQ.
not to overstate it, but it WAS a legit DQ, though it's not often called. on the other hand, no one i know wants to win a race that way, just as i'm sure mark didn't want to lose a race that way. i've seen some pics of the the infamous turn--some at the site listed below, some from another site--and mark clearly leaves room, which was a mistake on his part, then clearly closes the door on nick, who probably regrets trying to pass on the inside...
Those first three pictures on Page 6 are worth 1000 words.

Pictures 61, 62, 63.
I thought he was DQed because they found out he is actually only 38 1/2.
I originally thought the trailing runner was attempting an inside pass and the leader closed him out... legal. The pictures show the Gomes simply cutting in way too soon. According to the rules, this is a slam dunk, by the book, DQ. Not sure where the controversy is. If you disagree with this call, you simply don't think the rules should be enforced. You are advocating steroid use, running around the barriers in the steeple, false starts and breaking every other rule in the book. Follow the rules and you don't get dq'd. Pretty simple formula.
Is this the same Mark Gomes who went to Stoughton High School in Massachusetts in the late 1980s?
Yes...this is the same runner. Not bad for a kid from Stoughton!

I think the photos make a good case for a DQ. From the video, you couldn't really tell what was happening and I would tend to want to err on the side of no DQ. However, the photos can also be deceiving.
Regardless of the physical evidence, the fact that Gomes is not complaining means that he thought there was a case. Sadly for him, I think he would have won even without the contact.
