Seriously WTH is Alberto doing with his camp: Mo Farah 26:47, Galen Rupp last 800m 1:52.5

If they both race up to their potential, they will have a great shot at medaling. Hope they prepare well for the heat/humidity.

There is a pretty big difference between a 1:56 and a 1:52.5

Sure they sound close but it takes a hell of a lot of work to cut 3.5 seconds off of an 800m time, even WITH a noticeable difference in the rest experienced beforehand

Interestingly, some might say there is a pretty big difference between a 26:59 and a 28:38.

I'm here to discuss running not name calling and 1:52.5 by Rupp who a couple years ago wasn't a great kicker is pretty impressive to me.

how was rupp not impressive...rupp beat a 12:58, 1500-5000 guy who was a half step away from medaling in a 13:40 world championship race...this race was not fast but outkicking a guy like that in a slow race has to be considered impressive (unless youre an idiot)

that said, lagat will probably win the 5000...but losing to a top 6-7 tactical racer (in my opinion #1) of all time hardly makes a performance "unimpressive"

I also find this amazing. Has Bekele himself ever run faster than 1:52 for the last 800?

Rupp looked like he was willing to start walking at any point in the race if the pace slowed enough as long as he was near the lead. I have never seen him so confident in his kick. On the final straight, he was looking up at the jumbotron all lol-like.

We have ourselves a legit medal contender here. Everything about Rupp looked perfect in this race except for the goofy mask.

OK, my sources are telling me that Rupp closed in 1:52.6 and of course he ran 28:38. No, I AM NOT IMPRESSED. This is not bad, but it is inferior to Solinsky's 1:56 finish in an AMERICAN RECORD. The only thing impressive was that Rupp won, which is the goal.

Solinsky race was much faster then Galen's race tonight; however, look at the spilts of the last 800m and the effort of the last 800m.

Solinsky

60.2

56.2/1:56.4

Galen

58.4

54.2/1:52.6

Sure Solinsky 10000m was faster but in his last 800m he ran hard all the way thru the line to run sub 27 so he was balls to the wall.

Galen Rupp didn't really up the pace til 700m to go. Even then he was relax and content to leave it a to a kick and then he eased up the last 70-80 meters when he looked up at the big race monitor and saw he had it won.

Galen's 1:52.6 could have easily been 1:51.2 had he sprinted thru to the line and not eased up 70m out.

It actually shows what I have maintained all along. That purely as a display of speed Solinsky's finishing 1:56 at Payton Jordan really wasn't that great. It was more an impressive display of strength where coming off that pace he could close like he did.

But you can't extrapolate that Solinsky coming off a 28:30 pace in a 10K has the speed to close at 53 seconds.

Don't get me wrong. Solinsky has good speed for a distance runner. But its hardly better than some other American distance runners, let alone 5K East African runners.

Or at least he hasn't shown it yet.

WOW 1:52.5 I just saw the race and Rupp was relaxed and stop pushing almost 100m out from the line. He definitely could have run 1 to 1.5 seconds faster indicating he could have run his last 800m at 1:51.0. Even though it was slower than Solinsky's AR Galen's last 800m was more impressive.

Matt Tegenkamp is definitely a very good world class closer and he didn't have an answer for Galen's speed. Even off that pace I think you could count on one hand the number of African who could close that fast with no strain.

Exactly. It sounds like people aren't comprehending how fast 1:52 is.

What is Alberto doing? His athletes live in a altitude house. They have alll this crap to help them that most likely few others in the world have. (Not to mention Rupp has been coached by Salazar since he was in high school, I'm sure that helps.)

Personally, I don't think Rupp would be the National Champ if Solinsky was in the race.
