Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jgRe5Lar4Nk& Cain gets the baton at 6:40. Went out in 58.
so she ran 2:08?
Nothing Mary does shocks me anymore. She has a great coach(Jim Mitchell) who has her peaking right on time. This is a kid that needs to be coached with great care and Mitchell seems to be very aware of that. She won't be overraced or overtrained. Can't wait to see her in the mile tommorrow night. People have called her "little Mary Decker", she is becoming BIG Mary Cain!

How could she get the baton at 6:40?
According to the official splits that the poster above you listed, the 3rd leg of the relay didnt finish until 6:46...
Besides Mary Cain being a frosh, the other girls on Bonxville team were Rizzo soph, Cambell frosh, and Hoffer frosh! WOW!
Also a very intelligent, well-spoken kid, good sense of humor - beyond her years. Not the stereotype shy freshman or obsessive-seeming at all.
Sorry, I was looking at the YouTube timing and "6:46" looked like "6:40" to my old eyes.

Wow. Kid has some serious wheels! Nice stride, and heels pretty much clip her butt -- like w/ a sprinter! -- in that 800. But she's a female freshman, and the jury is out on her potential given that she might "blossom" and lose the advantage of more masculine mechanics (narrow hips, etc.). Maybe she'll remain Jordanesque.

I have to say, that was awesome.
She is Beast. I was aware of her and had followed some of her results, but this is the first time that I have seen her run. Amazing! She is running at NCAA Division I championship level right now. She is definitely one to watch.
seriously guys, take a look a that video---the stride in particular, looks like a massive talent---Mary Decker-ish, quite frankly-----
i am like most on these boards---"here we go, another phenom who will run her best times as a frosh, wait until she matures" and generally would have skipped the video--this time i watched, she looks amazingly smooth-
many phenoms are such because they have A)not fully matured and B)come from programs where as a ninth grader they have probably run much more than your average track 9th grader-------maybe she fits the bill on both counts, but looking at that video, how smooth and relaxed and untroubled she appears as she is running at near all time high school speed, i think we are looking at the future of American female middle distance running
Her stride reminds me of Bekele's, the backkick is ridiculous.
It's kind of startling to see such a skinny little girl running 2:03. Crazy.
However, like others I am reluctant to read too much into this. All the girls who have recently come close to 2:00 flat in high school - Rebekah Noble (2:03.73), Chanelle Price (2:01.61), and Laura Roesler (2:03.08) - have stagnated after getting there so early. Noble only got down to 2:02.07 at Oregon, Price 2:01.33 after several years at Tennessee, and Roesler, while she is only a freshman at Oregon, ran that 2:03.08 as a sophomore in high school and has not bettered it yet.
Contrast that with every sub-1:49 boy since 2000 -
Krinik US #1 2010 - 1:48.20 - redshirted I think
FitzSimons US #2 2010 - 1:48.83 - redshirted I think
Andrews US #1 2009 - 1:48.66 - 1:44.71 pr
Greer US #1 2008 & US #2 2009 - 1:47.68 - 1:45.03 pr
Mellon US #2 2008 - 1:48.64 - 1:47.45 pr
Franklin US #3 2008 - 1:48.97 - 1:48.39 pr
Primm US #1 2007 - 1:48.63 - 1:44.71 pr
Hernandez US #1 2004 - 1:48.48 - 1:45.31 pr
McGrath US #1 2003 - 1:48.56 - 1:47.62 pr
Smith US #1 2002 - 1:48.94 - 1:46.65 pr
Webb US #1 2001 - 1:47.74 - 1:43.84 pr
Johnson US #2 2001 - 1:48.21 - 1:44.69 pr
Sylvester US #3 2001 - 1:48.76 - 1:46.21 pr
A lot more hits than misses on this list.

Partially agree, but look back to the record holder, Kim Gallagher, and you have an Olympic medalist, and Mary Decker 2:03...nuff said.
Price and Noble were both very mature for their age in HS, doesn't seem the case here. Roesler just ran 51.x relay at NCAA's, so she's legit.
Looking forward to Weissenbach v. Wilson v. Cain next year- sub- 2:00?
Look at Mary Cain's ground contact time. Serious talent. Do not rule out a 54.5 400 next year. That adds up to a sub-2 800. More than talent. A work of art.
Cain is only slightly younger than Wesley Frazier who had 2 wins and a 3rd! at NBN in 48 hours. Better than a 2:03 relay leg.
fun to watch, even speculate, lets just wait and see
