!!! 9:54.22 !!! AISLING CUFFE NATIONAL RECORD

The HS girls 3000/3200/two mile record situation is mess right now. Converted to the full, it is something like Mortensen, Bjorklund @ 9:51, Cuffe @ 9:54. Someone needs to come along and run 9:49/50 and "clean it up", so to speak.

I completely agree! Cuffe was fantastic and ran a incredible race but this "record" business seems a bit off and not exactly clear. So Kim Mortensen's 9:48 2mile is not the "National Record" because why........? Did she not run that in HS only competition? And if you convert up Hasay's 3200 a few years back, it's roughly the same isn't it? I'm not being negative here, I just don't see the consistency in giving these performances the status of "record". The same goes for Kim Gallagher's 2:01 800 meters run as a Junior in HS only competition! What gives????

Mortensen ran 9:48 for 3200m not 2 miles. Cuffe's is the fastest two mile time, although Mortensen's is superior on the conversion.

I would leave 3000m out of it entirely because there is too much room for argument on the conversion. It's a different event.

If she was a 21 yr old Kenyan 11th grader (claiming to be 18) the same complainers would eat her dirty toilet paper and praise her to the rafters. That's the kind of weak white pussies America turns out today.

Leaving out the 9:08 would be ignoring one of the best female HS performances of all time. On any conversion it beats 9:54. Also if some boy had run 7:54 in 1975, it would be included in a discussion of the boys' times. Like I said, once some girl runs sub-9:50 for the deuce, then this mess will begin to be resolved and more congruent with the boys. THIS should be the "grail" that future girls are after, not 9:54.

There's no need for Bjorklund's time to be ignored. It is the 3000m HS record and the event is still competed at the HS level, although not as often as 3200m/2 mile,

If an Ameican runs faster than Webb's 3:46.91 for the mile, it's the American mile record. There might be a discussion of how it would compare to the American 1500m record, but that would be a minor detail.

3200m and two mile, on the other hand, are close enough to make the conversion pertinent and I have no problem with the notion that Mortensen's time remains the standard.

Sorry, what is so special about 9:54? To put it into perspective, Lukas would have lapped her and would bring home a 500m lead. It's time for the US ladies to step up their game.

Just because she didn't drop a 56 doesn't mean it was not an impressive run. Hell, the fact that it was just under her average pace suggests she ran an almost perfectly paced race, and didn't have tons left over in the tank. Well done Aisling on an impressive run!

in terms of records there is a record for the 3200, record for the 2-mile, and record for the 3000. conversions are only for the runners themselves, for example cuffe said she wasn't as happy with the 2 mile record, because even though it is officially a natioal record for the 2 mile she knows it is a slower time than kim mortensen's converted 3200.

How much better is this girl going to get?

She's an 80lb aerobic machine and I must be honest that once she grows up from a tiny girl to a adult woman things aren't going to go so well. Do any of you agree?

Once the hips come, the breasts, the adaptations for childbirth I can't imagine her getting much better. With that being said, when she does mature and if she works real hard after that happens, she could get back to her old self, or better.

A 2 mile consists of 8 x 1/4 mile. 594.22/8 = 74.28 for each quarter, not 400m. Her final quarter was the fastest quarter mile of the race, still extremely even and great!!

Here's an interesting perspective on Cuffe's last lap:

Cuffe studied the field. The Cornwall (N.Y.) senior knew that Kayla Beattie of Woodstock (Ill.) would push a hard pace. Cuffe knew she wanted to follow. Cuffe also decided that she did not want the race to come down to a sprint. So with two laps left, Cuffe took off.

“I knew that if I waited until the last lap, I might not have had as much and Kayla would have been more determined to fight back,” Cuffe said. "I wanted to go then, even if it meant sacrificing my legs for later."

what????? sara sargent is no where near as talented as aisling cuffe. sara doesnt know how to pace herself and her "kick" is just speed that she has left when she doesnt work the middle part of the race. her plan sprint the first 400m hang on as long as possible, slow down/ get tired and then sprint the last 400m

details details is absolutely right, IMHO. In addtion to the statistical problems with trying to convert a 3000 to a 3200/2 mile, they are quite simply different events, from a performance standpoint. You're talking about removing 1/16th of the 3200 race distance to get to 3000, and even more for the 2 mile. That may sound like a small amount, but at such an extremely high level of performance, it's actually fairly significant. The top 3000 races and the 3000 record deserve their own recognition, but they should not be evaluated in the same equasion as the 3200/2 mile. The 3000 is simply a different and shorter event.
