I am on the tail-end of my 2nd visit to Lijiang, Yunnan Province, PRC China. Heading back to Bangkok and then Japan starting tommorrow, then back here at the end of the month.
I have been to 40 countries in the world now, and I have trained in countless locations including the running meccas of Eugene and Boulder. The only significant "running mecca" that I have not been to is Albuquerque.
Lijiang lies at 2400meters altitude, and the weather is cool and clear. No pollution to speak of, tons of roads with little traffic, farm roads, and trails.
I have a training partner with me, a sub 13;30 5km runner, and he agrees that this place is nothing short of incredible.
The hotels are really nice at 100 Yuan (about US$11) per night with breakfast included, and I had dinner for about US 50-Cents tonight (rice, stew and tea). The internet cafe that I am at right now is 3 Yuan per hour (US 40 cents). The ONLY thing that the place lacks is an all-weather track, but the dirt track at the local Jr. High is really cool, surrounded by old stone walls and trees.
The roads are marked every kilometre, so pacing is not a problem. Beautiful mountain peaks surround the city, and are truly an inspiring site. If you want to go higher, Zhongdian (10,500 feet) is a 6 hour bus ride. 5 days in Zhongdian makes the altitude of Lijiang seem low. You can get quite a boost in your hematocrit from 4-5 days in Zhongdian, then coming back down to Lijiang.
The locals are quite friendly, and you get a lot of Hello's when you are running about. Of course, there is no shortage of beautiful young Chinese women, all very friendly to westerner gents.
Peace and love to all....
