I found it interesting that NBC highlighted Pistorius who finished last in the 400 and even interviewed him after the race.
Showing a quick stat for the HS record on the screen is the least they could have done.

Can't believe that the post highlighting this didn't get more attention.

EVERYONE
Lukas Verzbicas is 18, he was born January 6, 1993
Koech is younger than Verzbicas (he's about 17 and a half) and came in 3rd at 8:14.16.
No recognition...

That just shows really how far "Anglo Europeans" have to go before they even come close to the Africans! Next year when Edward Cheserek, The "New American" breaks this record, what are we all going to say then?
My take on it wrote:
Yes, he's been an American citizen for almost a year.
Listed in the results as Lithuanian.

The reason Webb's record was more touted was because he was in the freaking race. LV was last, and he's not even American.
The reason was because it was the mile and not the 2 mile.
Lukas is 18 and 5 months
German ran 3:55 and 7:47.9 well before that age.
7:47.9 would be about an 8:20 two mile.
German was a better runner than Lukas AT THE SAME AGE.
Dude is most likely in his 20s and needed to get dragged along to run this time. Not impressed at all, record still belongs to German in my eyes.

The difference in months doesn't matter, the difference in highschool versus college is all important, that and the fact that German was done already.

hm.
someone else said he's been an american for a year
Guys still make threads about the "legends" who ran 35 years ago. They treat them like gods. This kid runs 11 seconds faster than the likes of Prefontaine and Virgin and people actually find a way to diminish his accomplishment.
He ran every major HS cross country and T&F race with HS kids and won. He did it with poise and grace and a special purpose and he did it on his own terms, something that PRE would have loved. Probably good that he is going to Oregon.
He had the guts to mix it up with pros just like Webb and blew away the HS record. I never saw him succumb to pressure and he always performed and seldom made excuses. Is he to blame that he couldn't be pushed by any HS runner in the country?
He is in fact a hero and a role model, but you just can't accept it.
German ran 7:47 TRAINING AND RACING REGULARLY WITH OTHER TOP COLLEGIATES. Lukas trains alone, competing in the few meets he can. Two excellent young athletes, hopefully LV will end up better at UO than GF at OSU.I was the same age as Lukas in High School, only a minute and a half slower :/

And he takes the bait!
German ran 4:00(4:01.66 mile)/8:34(8:36.98 2 mile)double and 8:34 2mile when he was around 17 and a half.
When Lukas was 17 and half his PRS were 4:04.38 and 8:40.7.
Both of them were competing off High School training.

You beat me to it. Honestly, as much as I appreciate some of the accomplishments of the best U.S. high school distance runners, Koech's indoor 5,000 in 12:53 makes some of the talk about "high school" records seem a bit hyperbolic.
I wonder if Andy Bumbalough is embarrassed that he came within a few seconds of getting beat by a high schooler.

Lukas was Footlocker champion at freaking 16, German was nothing but well beaten 3rd over 20 seconds off 1st and 2nd place, STFU already. German's biological age was 28 at 18, he's 45 now at 20.
The problem here is that these type of running message boards were started in the late 1990's or early 2000's when distance running was at low ebb from HS through the professional ranks. These sites were populated by bitter runners from the 1970's-1980's who never profited from running, missed the 1980 Olympics and were pissed off by the emergence of the East African runner and possible PED situation. Cetainly their bitterness can be understood, but the narcissism that led to downgrading anything that wasn't from the past only highlights the reason why this sport is not bigger than NASCAR.
They sort of shot themselves in the foot, didn't they?
We were worried that the National broadcast wouldn't show him much so we put a solo camera on him for the whole race.
Here is his full race!

I rarely ever come here and post, but...
Everyone needs to relax and give credit where it is due. If any of you were offered the opportunity to run against Bernard Lagat, Matt Tegankamp, and other incredible runners, in Hayward Field, which will be his home track next year of all things (!), you would turn it down? Lukas weighed his options, and thought that this was an opportunity to break the record, and he took it. He didn't have set pacers for those race, the pace going out slow was a blessing. But I'm sick of hearing about "is he an American citizen", "is he 18 or not", lay it to rest! He absolutely DESTROYED German's record, and though his training and racing may seem unorthodox, praise him on his amazing run, regardless if you like him or not.
DaveW,
I know we all have our own pet peeves (mine, I suppose, include downhill, wind-aided, and rabbitted races), but your obsessions seem a bit . . . odd.
