goes out too fast...8:38
How about this. We should praise him because he is one of the few Americans who is actually willing to mix it up with the big names at a big meet in our country.
Luke Puskedra did the same thing in 2008. Same situation, an Oregon recruit, wanted a shot at the record. Bolota Asmeron was right at the pace he needed, so possibly there could be someone to chase. The couple races I've seen Lukas do this spring he's been great -- he won the Shamrock Shuffle in Chicago, and was right with the leaders in another road mile race. So I'd guess there's some chance he could dip under 8:30.

Sorry, he didn't win the Shamrock. He was 2nd behind Simon Bairu (13:25/27:23 track PRs, 28:30 road) in 23:55 to Bairu's 23:38 on a windy day where some places got 60 mph winds and tornado watch. On such a day, 4:48 pace was quite good.

I though LV was a US citizwn now. Hasn't LV represented the US in junior triathlon events?
What kind of shape is LV in right now? When Fernandez set the 2-mile record he was coming of the ridiculous 1600/3200 double at the CA state meet. Everyone knew German was in shape to break the 2-mile record a few weeks after the CA state meet.
Lukas should run in the 10K and get right behind the leaders. Less pressure for him versus trying to hang on to a breakneck pace in the 2 mile.
I'm predicting a 26:45ish for the 10K. Not sure if they are going to have pacers or not, but...
64.2 per lap X 8 = 8:33.6 < 8:34.4
Lukas Verbiolitious is from Lutherania, Litvenia, Lustenburger or one of those other oddly shaped Eureo-peeing countries with National Records like 28:25 set back in 1973. His ticket to the OG2012 is thru his home country.

There is a big difference between getting getting "sucked" to a fast time in a mile when you are going to be able to hang longer and not have to run by yourself for as much of the race and getting sucked to a fast time in a 5k where there is a 45s+ gap between you and the next guy, sure he may get sucked along for the first mile but then, after running that first mile he is going to be gassed, have two miles to go and be promptly dropped (unless the pace is slow), and then have to finish the last two miles of the race by himself, exhausted from going out to hard. ...
Interesting point, but its a 2 mile, not a 5k.
im talking about him running two miles, not 5k. everythign u said really didnt have much of anything to do with it, besides the pacer comments. and theres no well in hell, even in a 5k (unless theres a sub 13, but even that chances are slim to none) that he will be lapped, no ones gonna drop a 40 second last lap to pass him. and the reason he doesnt do it on his own pace is, again, he's getting sucked to a fast time. thats how u get fast times, u race with the best. same issue with alan webb and andy wheating. and even gerry lindgren, he raced ron clarke to get that record.

We're trying to have a civilization here.
Why don't you ask him? Do your own research.
Already did. His parents are a product of the Iron Curtain sports machine and they have aptly programmed (autogenically trained) Luckas to do what he has to do. One comparison that cannot be overlooked and has never been mentioned, look at German Fernandezs' CIF records. In both instances when German crosses the line (after an almonst 3:59 mile) he collapses 25 yards out the competitions way and is on the ground. That is aerobic debt, the price one pays for records anybody who says flying through the finish and not being on the ground after the race is anything at best - a loon. this actually makes me wonder whether he could set the 2 mile record enroute in the 10k (obviously, stopping at 2M, or maybe jogging the rest in lane 3 like those British juniors in the euro 5k w/rupp and farah this year) if they had a camera at what would be the 2M mark. the pace would be more suitable to him.
This would make sense. Would it be Chris Thompson? I agree, on the surface of it, LV is way over his head. The only way it makes sense is if he is running a separate "race" within the real race. This is akin to Puskedra running in that Pre meet 10K in 08' when Bekele was going for the world record.

I think that one of the pacemakers is for him since he is after all going to Oregon in the fall. Probably someone from the OTC to bring him round 4:14-4:17.
Why he thinks, or anyone thinks, he would "blow" the competition away in a high school only 2Mile is insane. Cheserek ran with him the entire race indoors. Last year when he tried to break German's record, the Rosas totally broke him. I know they have faced some injuries, but a totally healthy Joe Rosa would have challenged him in a 2 mile, and Cheserek already has this year.
He should run the 10 and go for Chapa's record.
This is a classic Oregon PR stunt for one of their recruits. They have done it before. I bet Jordan McNamara, or some other Oregon or OTC affiliated runner will rabbit him.

Its actually 27:31 from 1978, duh. Curious that the Lithuanian national record for the mile is only 4:04 (from 1957), although the 1500 is 3:40. Lukas could have that mile record if he wanted it.
