53 Years old, 6' 0" 165 (down from 185 a few months ago after adopting a daily fast until 1-2 PM)
It's been many weeks since I've posted. Last summer I embarked on checking out my heart health as I was concerned about some chest discomfort after competing at US masters nationals in rowing. An arterial calcium score came back very high (600) and a slightly enlarged aorta added to the concerns. (Turns out rowers have a high incidence of enlarged aortas, especially masters-aged competitors.)
Fast forward to winter/spring when I had a heart catheterization which revealed that the calcium deposits (plaque) seem stable and are not creating any obvious pinch points. Good news, though still concerning. I've been on the standard statins, aspirin, etc. for almost a year now. My blood pressure, which tended toward the high side, is now typically checking in (home monitor) at very reasonable levels (120/80).
Rowing has been difficult this year -- I'm getting more comfortable in a single but my main background is in sweep rowing and team boats, which have not been an option for several months.
So I'm back to running 3 or 4 days a week, plus a few rowing sessions and some bodyweight strength work. Generally running about 15 to 20 miles per week.
Home base is at 5400 feet elevation, but this week we are in SoCal at seal level -- my typical 8:15 to 8:30 running pace at home is good for 7:50-8:05 here, which feel nice. A couple of decades ago I was running 10Ks in the 38-39 minute range and marathons at 3:10-3:15. My erg scores (rowing machine) which were once quite respectable have slowed even more than my running. Since I was never really all that fast anyway I'm not too worried about it. At least that's what I try to tell myself.
That's the report. Good to see so many of you running strong and battling through the injuries and health issues that are plainly inevitable for geezer jocks. Life is pain -- enjoy it.
