Today’s lunchtime run: 4 miles on the track, 38:27 (9:37/mile), 70 F., partly sunny, humidity 82%, wind 11 mph.
Mile splits: 9:32, 9:35, 9:49, 9:31.
Thoughts:
1) This run was easier than most of you guys do on your easiest easy day, but for me it was pretty good! My timed 4-miler on the track last Tuesday was 43:28 (10:52/mile). That day was 70 F. and overcast, so today was actually a little tougher for running.
2) I think I should lower my time goal for my planned 5K next Jan. 1 from sub-30:00 to sub-28:00. That's assuming it’s not too snowy and icy. It’ll be Jan. 1 in New England; could be a foot of snow on the ground, no way of knowing now.
3) Best sign today: For the first time since I can remember, I had spring in my step. You know how you see young people running on the street, and they have that spring in their step? Often I point it out to my wife when we are out walking: “See that spring in his/her step? I don’t have that now.” You can say the spring in my step was due to the new-ish shoes and the synthetic track, and there is probably a lot of truth in that observation. However: last week I ran in the same shoes on the same track, and there was no spring. Just plodding. Today I felt almost like I had springs on my feet, by comparison. But let's not get carried away: it was still only 9:37 mile pace.
4) My lunch hour is only one hour, so I had to rush my warmup and did no cool-down. For my warmup, I jogged a slow painful lap, then walked to and fro on the track for about two minutes. There was no spring in my step during the warmup lap. Then I started running my timed 4 miles, and suddenly there was springiness from out of nowhere. It was very welcome.
5) I have told myself not to run on my lunch hour. For one thing, there isn’t quite enough time to fit in a warmup plus a 4 mile run plus a cool-down. For another thing, running at lunchtime usually leaves me tired and not as productive at work during the afternoon. But I just couldn’t help it today! Even though it was gloomy and overcast at the start, I just wanted to get out there and run. Just can’t stop, when my spark gets hot.
