Mo’pac, one question I’ve had about your kayak. Do you wind up 70 minutes down stream at the end? How do you get back?? It’s not like ambling back down a hill ...
My river sessions are usually in the Campaspe River where I have a broad section with about 1800 metres between 2 sets of small rapids. I start just near the lower rapid. I do laps up and down. If conditions are right I can squeeze up through the top rapid and paddle a bit further upstream. It is not a technical run back through that rapid.
I will roll through the bottom rapid and turn around and crank it up to get back up, a good bit of power required.
I sometimes paddle the faster moving Goulbourn. I will cruise down about a km where it forks around an island. I loop around and get a gut busting few minutes smashing my way upstream for about 200 fast moving metres. After that it is a bit easier. I will paddle back upstream past the start then finish off with some fast armspeed work on the way back down.
I went too far downstream one day. Turned to paddle back up and was slowly going backwards. I had to head to the bank and walk it back for a bit.
I still get some decent workrate on the downstream paddling in most cases.
