I have SoCal Pete's 5K book, as well as the free ebook which, according to the copyright page, it essentially IS in print form. I still think print is handier and am glad to have this. The shoe tip from Pete's journal was great.
I do count miles every week, though come to think of it, there really isn't any reason to any more. Total time running and time spent in medium/hard running are really all that matter. But when I started out my miles were very important. Before I kept a log, I added 10 miles in one week and gave myself DOMS.
I posted above about my injury. This is the weirdest training log I've had, ever:
Mon - 13.47miles, impaled L medial ankle
Tue - no miles, trip to urgent care
Wed - no miles, lots of hobbling
Thu - 3 miles walking with the bride
Fr - 3 miles walking with the bride
Sa - 7.47miles
Su - 13.21 miles at 8:30 with 3 x 2miles at 7:00
So that's one way to get to 40.
