After wimping out on my planned long run last weekend, and with my marathon only 7 weeks away, I really needed to get in a solid long run this weekend. Fortunately the stars of weather and energy aligned with me Saturday morning, and I ran 19.9 miles in 2:58 (3:55 marathon pace). Nothing hurt or went wrong and I was still running well at the end, but I was getting mighty weary and continuing for almost another hour felt pretty questionable. But I’m happy with this run given no taper (I had run 44 miles in the previous 4 days) and no race-day adrenaline. It was my longest run in over 3.5 years.
My heel was more sore than usual this morning, though not nearly as bad I had feared. I took the day off and just spun the bike trainer, and plan to go to the gym later on a cold, rainy day. Since I’d also taken off Monday following last Sunday’s long run, I ran only 5 days this week but totaled 64 miles. I’m currently planning two more runs in the 20-23 mile range, 5 and 3 weeks before the race, with the understanding that all plans need to be flexible.
Allen1959, I’m really sorry to hear about your ongoing knee problems. I am generally pretty skeptical about “medical professionals” with running injuries; there may be good orthopedists and physical therapists who understand runners and their injuries, but I’ve never found one. That said, you have an injury that was caused at least partly by a sudden trauma rather than just overuse, and there may be something that a medical professional can do for you. At least I would think it’s worth a try.
