Welcome, Big Mango! Those are some fine times you’re posting under very difficult conditions. I don’t think I’d choose to live in Thailand, particularly not as a runner, but I assume you have other reasons. Nice race, dhaaga. Charlie, nice goal for the summer. Allen1959, I’m happy to see you progressing in mileage. Igy, it must be great to have the “finish line” on chemo in sight—let’s hope this is it!
My life in the 60+ age group did not start auspiciously. I had cramped up badly in the calves over the last two miles of my half-marathon last weekend and my left calf continued to bother me this week. Then I gave my final exam Wednesday morning to a room of kids that sounded like the pneumonia ward at the hospital. After handling several hundred exams for hours that day, I came down with a sore throat on Friday and suffered through the weekend with a nasty upper-respiratory bug. At least the calf is getting a chance to heal.
Monday: 90 minutes on bike trainer.
Tues: 10.6 mile run at 9:15 pace, fairly easy. Calf was getting sore near the end.
Weds: 90 minutes on trainer.
Thurs: 10.4 miles averaging 9:12 pace. Was going faster until my calf cramped up badly about 7 miles in. Thought I might have to walk 3 miles back, but after a bit of cautious jogging I managed to get going again and finish running, although not fast.
Fri: Calf very sore. 90 minutes on trainer (which doesn’t bother the calf).
Saturday: Sick. Sat home eating and feeling sorry for myself all day.
Sunday: Still sick, but figured walking wouldn’t hurt and did a planned 4-hour hike with husband and dog. Nose was dripping like a faucet but otherwise felt fine.
I figure on taking at least one more day off from anything that will force me to breathe hard, then try to ease back into it.
