I submitted to a cortisone injection in my heel for the pain, before I did, the podiatrist discovered and showed me the REAL source of my pain. A VERY small piece of medial heel spur had broken off and was floating free in an inflamed area. So he told me that if a shot of lidocaine eliminated the pain in that area, it was "proof" that the cortisone shot will take the swelling down and allow me to return to pain-free running. I took the shot, only 1 cc of it.
Wouldn't you know, between working on my feet every day the next four days that I'd have a "cortisone flare-up". Heel was very puffy and very sore in both medial and lateral areas. Only answers are 1) rest (couldn't do, working fulltime), 2) naproxen (done), and 3 icing multiple times daily (done). It was scary, I was afraid that the shoot permanently damaged the protective sheath around the heel bone. But it did get slowly less painful. Also meant that the 5 km that we'd entered for Saturday was skipped, and my wife found several reasons for her to sleep in, too :)
This AM the pain is neglible, even without naproxen last night, yahoo! I did get in 3:15 in AirDyne work this week (old Schwinn model that works upper and lower body), plus 6 miles running before finding I needed that cortisone, plus 2 weightlifting workouts this week.
I have read that Jack Daniels has again restudied 45 men that he studied in their prime, like the Jim Ryan, Bill Rodgers, group of Olympians. He's found that those that maintained fitness AND controlled their weight were highest in VO2, and that those that were fit and gained weight still had higher VO2's than the lean but unfit. Certainly more to come from him on this.
Glad that I have another day off after my one day of work today. Have really some catching up to do to prepare for my October 1/2 marathon in Des Moines. The day before it is my brother's wedding, so also was fitted for my tux, first time ever! That'll be worth a photo.
Cannot wait to return to the community of runners and create some new stories. We've had a great summer here, so looking forward to a nice fall, and maybe some Sept. races to prepare for October.
KP, we understand that the LunaRacers are being DQ'd, is that true? Jane is very sad.
