Week 222
*************************
Greetings, 50+ers! Hope you are enjoying your Labor Day Weekend! It was a busy week here in the Bluegrass that, among everything else going on, also included my 56th B-day and our 33rd Anniversary. Despite all this and the return of sweltering heat (after a unusually mild August), I managed to get 6 runs in with some good effort (probably too much) and 37+ miles. Here's what the log reads:
Sun: 5.0 7:03 avg pace (last 2: 631,654)
Mon: 5.1 easy (7:45 pace)
Tue: 5.0 w/2x cut-down 1600s (400 splits-1st:100,89,87,83; 2nd:96,96,89,84)
Wed: off
Thur: 6.2 w/3-mile hard tempo @6:30 pace
Fri: 4.3 easy (7:53 pace) felt harder than it shoulda
Sat: 12.1 (7:31 avg pace) w/4 @ or under 7:00 pace.
Sunday's run was meant to be easy, but one of the guys started ratcheting up the pace, and fool that I am, I couldn't just let him go. Tuesday's workout was meant to be 3 cut-down 1600s, but it was hot and I started too fast; I baled after 2 when I was getting a little light-headed and my skin started feeling tingly (Side note: it was also the 12th day in a row of running for me, longest streak in quite some time.) Took a much needed break Wednesday. Made up for Tuesday's sub-par track workout on Thursday, with the best tempo I've run in a while. My buddy and I went right at dusk, so while the temps were still in the mid-80s, at least the Sun was down. Felt surprisingly good! The heat and humidity made Friday's easy late morning run a real slog, but we had a nice solid long run Saturday with 4-miles of pace in the middle (truth be told, though, I had to stop for a minute in the middle of the 4-mile 7-minute stretch after a tough hill.) All-in-all, I was pleased with how the week unfolded. The legs are feeling pretty good (a little tightness in the left IT will need some typical attention), and the gut is handling all of this without complaint.
Sorry for the Achilles' woes, Reboot and Paul061. Hope you find some relief! I've mentioned this before, but I've personally not had a good track record with conventional PT over the years (I know others have fared better.) It usually starts out with promise, but always seems to devolve and not "fix" the problem. I hope that you have better luck! Personally, I'd make sure that I explored all my options before committing to going under the knife.
Spikez, nice race (and nice photos on masterstrack, too!)! I'm still betting that record's coming down. I know what you mean about that extra weight and moving targets. It doesn't come off as easily as it did even five years ago for me, and I don't have any thyroid issues (that I know of.)
Welcome jra! I've run one of those Roadrunner Races; an out and back from Papago Park along the one of the canals. Quite a crowd , and a crazy staggered start, but it was a lot of fun, and the club went out of their way to make everyone welcome.
That's about it from here. Hope that you all have had productive weeks, whether it's running or rehabbing. Looking forward to your reports!
All the Best!
