Anyone know the guy who was right on him in the 1600? From what I heard from the crowd, he's presumably a sophomore.

He's a senior. Results at bottom of page.

Yes, that was senior Alejandro Montano from Catalina who stuck with Billy. He will be going to NAU.
The star AZ sophomore miler was unfortunately in the Div 1 race, not this Div 3 race. His name is Bernie Montoya and he won the 1600 in 4:12, which is a new AZ sophomore class record. He's from Cibola High in Yuma. And get this: he also lost a shoe 300 meters from the finish in this 1600 and still continued strong. His foot was totally blistered. Impressive kid. He also won his division XC title last fall.

Wow, A HS soph and he's already running like German Fernandez in college!

That is strange he lost a shoe, presumably running by himself at that point.
Are these three going to be in the meet of champions?

Does it matter what temp it was? 8:48 by yourself is incredible in any temperature.
Yes it matters...

The heat sheets should be available later tonight - hopefully these three and some other studs will be going head to head.
Dang BillyO has dropped his 1600 from 4:19 to 4:06 this spring and his 3200 9:04 to 8:48. He's on fire. Can't wait to see him race tonite!

Awesome. I hope there's going to be a video of the race.
meet of champions remains lame in az.....but Billy's attempt at the record has given it some credibility this year.
here are the heat sheets.
Is his choice of Harvard actually being questioned here? This place is unbelievable. A kid gets the chance to attend what many consider the most prestigious institution in the world, and people wonder why he doesn't go somewhere else because he MIGHT run a few seconds faster? Get a grip people.
PEDs!

Well there's no competition for him in the 1600m.

Knowing Will & Tommy, they'll probably be happy to push him for 1200 meters.

Why does it matter? It was only 80º (dry 80º) and the race was at night. Perfect conditions for running.
NtFny wrote:
I guess if you are a desert foxx mid-80s temps are about perfect, pretty hot for most 5k runners.
Not if the race is at night. The fastest 5k of 2010 was run in 93º temps. The fastest 3k of 2011 was run in the same.
anything?
4:05.27. New AZ state record. Awesome race by an awesome kid. Just amazing.
gave the race progression with splits.
