how to lose weight?

Even for a runner, losing weight is 80% food (eating less or eating better) and 20% exercise. Personally even at my highest mileage training weeks I only weighed about 2-3 lbs less than usual because I was so hungry, I was eating more.

See a nutritionist, one who works both with athletes and women. Honestly it sounds like you may have a bit on your plate besides just this issue so maybe sort out priorities?

I can commiserate -- I'm a few inches taller, but also curvy/pear shaped (and flat, ha). While I know that to the general population I'm probably seen as a beanpole, I don't look a THING like the typical-runner's-physique girls on my team. Which of course makes me feel like shit/a whale from time to time, gives me a complex, etc.

A while ago, I did visit a sports nutritionist -- I'm trying to remember all that he said, but some of his major points (which are pretty standard, but make sense) were:

- lean protein at every meal

- eat a large breakfast, with meals getting progressively smaller

- eat a snack w/ a good balance of carbs and protein before and after workouts

- think of food as fuel for your running, rather than something 'bad'

- make sure you eat more fruits/veg in a day than you do sweets (I'm definitely guilty of this some days. I also eat, I'm sure, far too many carbs/grains in a day, though I have a healthy diet otherwise, like you)

Glad you ditched your ex, and I'm glad you seem to realize that you're not ACTUALLY big and are in fact very tiny. I really doubt you have any weight to lose for looks' sake -- any weight you lose that will contribute to better performance will likely come off as a product of training harder and running more (I tell this to myself too, ha).

Don't focus on losing weight - likely a losing battle given your body shape. Be healthy, and be happy with your body. You sound cute.

i agree with an earlier poster--it's mostly about eating less. the more i run the more i eat. unless you're doing massive mileage, it's easy to eat extra calories.

i find if i run before dinner, then eat a regular size dinner, then go to bed slightly hungry, i lose weight.

as for where your body stores fat--not much you can do.

Love yourself, love your body... but there isn't anything wrong with trying to tighten it up a bit so you can feel better. I know what you mean about seeing elite women. I have pictures from Boston and I totally want to get ripped like Kara Goucher.

So,

- Don't stop eating meat, even the fatty kind; it will give you protein/fat that you need and make you feel full

- Get enough fats like olive oil and nuts. Nuts are great because they have protein, fat, fiber all which make you feel full and satisfy you.

- Try to eat complex carbs 3 hours before eating (whole grains)

- Get some simple carbs (fruit) after running

- Try to reduce/eliminate sugar and other simple carbs. It will make a big difference (no juice, soda, candy, chocolate, frapacinos)

- LIFT WEIGHTS!! Muscle burns more calories but more importantly lifting seems to give me a self-esteem and pride in my body that running doesn't. Yeah, sometimes I look at myself in the gym while I lift and think "DAMN look at my guns!" ;)

Oh yeah, the book Why We Get Fat is a good one. But you also have to consider eating as an athlete. I'm thinking about reading Paleo Diet for Athletes just to get some ideas.

My simple rule of thumb when I'm trying to gain my fitness and trim up - Water is the only thing I drink, water with ice, lemon, emergenc-ee is fine. Holding back on the beer is tough but if you're doin' work you gotta delay some gratification. I also stay away from anything found on a shelf at the grocery store with the exception of peanut butter and soup. Stick with stuff that comes from the produce section and the coolers and, viola. If I have to eat anywhere but the house it's a salad. You'll be a lean mean fighting machine in 3weeks time.

Doh, forgot to mention you should eat when you're hungry and stay away from any of that starvation crap. Portions matter a lot less when you're eating food that's good for you.

5'2" and 115 pounds... this is already OK. Some distance runners would be lighter at that height, but it's not really healthy to be obsessing about weight for it's own sake when you're already at a perfectly healthy weight.
