Marion Jones has a history of lying. I am not saying that she is guilty of drugs, but stuff that comes out of her mouth is unreliable. (Charlie Francis)

Similarly, USATF needs to do SOMETHING publicly, soon, like today, as these stories break. Instead, hacks like me travel over to the USATF site to look for any statement about or even acknowledgment of the story, and all there is is the usual rah-rah stuff. You would think the lawyerly Masback would know the meaning of the buzzword "proactive."
If Masback is pooing himself what about the broardcasters who have paid zillions.
The IOC must regret letting WADA loose on this lot.Though on reflection once the IRS got hold of it then the shit was bound to fly.

Incorrect. They can get in trouble if they admit to a doping infraction under oath, regardless of lacking postive tests. Ben Johnson's records, for example, were removed after he testified to long term cheating.
If any of these athletest admitted using banned substances in their grand jury testimony or if subpeonaed to the upcoming trial, then that would be good enough for the IAAF to apply retroactive sanctions.

So true, and you can lie to the public and in the papers without much worry. However, once on the stand and under oath and under penalty of perjury they can't lie and they know it. Why? Because the truth always comes out and if they lie and get caught in that situation they go to jail. Lie to the public and get caught, its an embarrassment and loss of sponsorship and your career. Lie on the stand and you go to jail. The stakes have risen to a new level. Now that Congress and the IRS are involved people will go down for sure....USATF and the USOC can't slap hands on this one and cover it up. The real story is going to come out very soon.

What I cannot believe is how there is a general acceptance of a widespread drug problem in our sport, and yet many people don't consider that the top athletes could POSSIBLY be using drugs.
Is Marion Jones tremendously talented, perhaps the most talented sprinter in the world? Most likely. Has she used performance drugs to help exploit that talent to it's fullest? Possibly, and we may soon learn more. The whole concept of "innocent until proven guilty" is a legal one. The public can speculate all it wants. Even though I believe there's a good chance she's used drugs, she won't be banned based on my opinion and those of others.

Correction: People don't consider that top AMERICAN athletes could possibly be using drugs. We're great at pointing fingers at other people, terrible at admitting our own faults -- kind of like our president.
What do you mean she lied in the past exactly, are you talking about her lying that she used steroids, or something else?

I reply.
Perhaps Conte would not supply Smith or they had $ probs over a previous deal.
Is not this the usual story when underground things go strange.
Doubting Thomas,
I am with you. Marion is just too good (literally and figuratively or is it in terms of athletics) to take drugs. She is just one hell of a gifted sportswoman.
Yet an east german with the clothes and make up sense of pre WW1 clearly is guilty. You cant assume anything, and I mean anything.
ok the theory/rumor on the coach that i heard that it was Marion\'s old coach and as soon as she and tim left to go work with ben johnson\'s old coach took the syringe in to bust them
Truth hurts, huh wejo...
the front page, the title of this post, and the tone of this thread are all typical of this site. Not a single thing has been proven. What we have here is a gov. agent claiming to have been told that athletes got drugs. But Conte won't confirm saying it and the athletes deny taking them. Even if Conte gave this list in a press conference we couldn't know he was telling the truth. To accept it from some intermediate source? Shame on you all. Especially on you, wejo.
But of course, I'm not surprised. On LetsRun, when it comes to drugs, any suspicion is taken as solid proof. The drug paranoia around here has reached a level that McCarthy himself would be proud of. The presumption of innocence is a totally foreign concept here. Sorry, but "some agent says that someone said..." doesn't constitute proof in my book.
HE'S JUST SAYING WHAT EVERY INFORMED TRACK FAN HAS SUSPECTED,BUT DON'T THINK ANYTHING IS GOING TO COME OF IT.
WAKE UP! Do you really believe that the only T&F athletes that have taken drugs are the handful that have been busted over the past several years? If they bust the 15 athletes listed (unlikely), that would represent only a tiny fraction of those who got away with it over the years. They still haven't released the test for human growth hormone. That means that outside of the monetary cost, it was a "free" drug. Just like EPO until they developed a test for it.
Did Wejo say that all of these athletes should be suspended, jailed, tortured, or executed because of the release of this list? No, he simply listed the names and what they were accused of. Letsrun.com takes a strong anti-drug stance and shouldn't be ashamed of it. It's a site run by competitive athletes who deserve to have a bias against drugs in their sport.
Again, WAKE UP and take a hard look at our sport.

Here is a list of the 15 track and field athletes that Victor Conte reportedly told an IRS agent he gave steroids according to the San Jose Mercury News. These names are in the print edition of today's Mercury News. Thanks to Mercury News reporter Mark Emmons for sending us the names.
How does 'reportedly told' morph into 'List of 15 Track Athletes Victor Conte Gave Steroids To', double hearsay becomes a fact, that's sloppy journalism!
Phil you sound like a guilty coach or worse yet agent. Probably more accurately a representative of Nike or someone that has something to lose financially. To be a member of an oranization it does not have to be "innocent until proven guilty". I hope that more people of influence in the sport like Wejo stand up and call these drug users out.

None of the above, but how about some accuracy in reporting, an 'allegedly' in the headline wouldn't come amiss!
Phil is the guy who thinks that THG positives are caused by taking oral contraceptives, that because Victor didn't publish in a peer-reviewed journal the anabolic profile of THG it shouldn't be banned, 'scuse me the record's stuck, 'scuse me the record's stuck, 'scuse me the record's stuck...
One has to wonder which of his life's disappointments caused him to throw his hat in on the dark side.
As for Marion's falliblity at Mt Sac this year .... sucks to be clean, eh?!
