The crazy thing is Karoki looked like he was running a 1500m for the final seven laps, yet finished nearly a minute off the WR.

That's because he jogged for 6800 m looking at all the girls in the stands and warming up for the 10000m B-heat. Put him in a real race and he will be under 27 faster than you can spell his first name correctly.

1) So, wejo, do Shalane's times now show that it was OK for her to change coaches?
She's OK to do whatever she wants. The question is does it make her career better.
Her world xc bronze (and NY runner-up) shows things are going well under Schumacher. However, she still has not run the track times she did under Cook. 30:22 in the heat of Beijing is amazing. Comparing an early season 10k to an Olympic or World Championship race when she wants to peak is not fair however.
but it seems like there are 20 guys from Kenya and Ethiopia who could do the same thing
20 seemed crazy high at first, but it actually may not be that far off.
The reason not many guys ran under 27 minutes for 10k last year is not because they can't do it. It's because there is 1) more money on the roads and marathon and 2) Not many top notch world class 10,000m. A lot of the guys smashing 1 hour in the half-marathon could go sub 27 on the track. Karoki is youn and with promise but saying he is a WC gold medallist is a huge, huge stretch. Most likely he doesn't make the Kenyan team.

Agreed, 30:22 in Beijing was amazing. 30:39 in a race with nothing at stake isn't bad, either. I think it could translate into a much faster time in Daegu later.
we could easily run a 10k trials race this year or next year with 8 sub 27:30 guys!
sol 26:59
rupp 27:08 (and can crush that this year if he gets a shot)
meb 27:13 (admittedly long ago)
abdi 27:17?
ritz 27:22 (and a sub 27 in the works if he is healthy ever)
curtis 27:24
nelson 27:28
teg 27:28
let's nickname the winner, who runs in japan after all, karaoke. karaoke is easily a big time sub 27 runner. he was running so easily those 62s and 64s. he may not make their team but he'll be a presence in europe this year.
isaac, karaoke, the 7:27 ethiopian, rudisha: lots of young talent on the scene this year.

Beijing wasn't hot. The temperature at starting time was ~71 and the dewpoint ~61. That dewpoint is fine for racing.
