Baumann ran 3.33 on several occasions and got outkicked.
Great race by Chrissky though!
Shouldn't a 12:55 guy be able to do 3:35 rather easily?
Not to knock a fine performance, but HE ran faster than CS 51 years ago.
Looking forward already to Pre......who runs better in 2M Lagat or Solinsky? US record to fall?
You mean the U.S. record-holder in the 10000 is STILL slower (slightly) than arguably the best miler of all-time? Chris will sleep on a tear-dampened pillow tonight, I'm sure.

just to clarify what i wrote in the first post,
i am a big russell brown fan, but honestly this was his race to lose. it was his distance (the 1500) and he was racing against decent, but not great competition.
solinsky on the other hand, is a 10k guy (he has stated he will do the 10k in london 2012) with long, long term goals of the marathon, and he busts a near world class time for the metric mile! amazing! scary, scary stuff with that 3:35 and his endurance. the man has a bright future.
STOP SOLINSKY.
3:35 is a distinctly average time for a distance runner, Mo Farah (equal range to Solinsky) has run 3:33.
Russell Brown is the most underrated 1500 man in the world.. A 3:32 for him this summer

I was thinking the same thing. I can't think of anyone who's medalled in the 5k who hasn't run 3:26 - low 3:30's (or been capable of it anyway).
The time could have been a bit faster... Huge kick at the end means he's in better shape than 3:35.9. But who cares about times let's see what he does against the Africans.

Nuh uh.
1992 Olympic 5000 - Baumann went from 4th to 1st in the last 100m.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i3ZZjC-MEHc&feature=relatedprops to brown for beating a 10k runner in a 1500. that's a big achievement for a middle distance that should superceded recognition of a 10k runner running a f***ing 3:35. i also agree with the guys saying cool, a 3:35... that's not going to help much when guys like bekele can drop a 3:40 with 2 miles on their legs.
finally, @LRC. THIS is what it means for a runner to have speed. i get tired of LRC writers saying that a marathoner has speed because he can run a decent 5k or 10k. that's not speed. speed means that a middle distance runner only squeaks by you in a kick
I liked this race.
1. Solinksy has already proven that he can compete with the best in the world. He doesn't need to do reprove himself.
2. The Mt. Sac pace was decent and Sol went at the bell. That's a move he'll continue to work on perfecting. Of course, when it comes to racing the world's elite he'll be better suited to following Brown's approach.
3. Watch the final 100 and check out how smooth Chris looks. His mechanics appear flawless. Batty's legs were flailing and even Brown's stride seamed somewhat cumbersome.
For Solinksy it's all tune-ups and tweaks. Not so for Teg. Teg has a long hard road in front of him.
1992 was prior to the African revolution.
Ryan Hall's brother: DFL
Tough break.
solinsky kicked around 54 or 53 off a college pace 1500. he wants a medal? A medal means kicking 53 last lap to medal in sub 27:10.
so lets just say it was a good race for a good american. this guy is going to be one of the best americans ever. He will never medal at the olympics, BUT he might get a WC podium finish in a weak year.
It's April and Sol-Train is running this off of 100-120 mile weeks. Make it a summer Golden League meet with a little sharpening and he runs 3:33 or better every time.
What was up with Chad Hall, listed as DNF in another heat?
Batty is a monster talent.

More "at the start of" than "prior to". Anyway, he got 4th at the olympics in '96 and that was probably the strongest era ever. 5th at WC's in 97 too.
And to the guy that said "you have to run 53 at the end of a 27:10 for a medal", no that isn't true. For a medal, it's more like 55 or 56 at the end of a 27:10.

RE: DID SOLINSKY JUST RUN 3:35??!?!?!??!?!?!??!?!?!????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
.
Yes he did, he absolutely did. Actually it was almost 3:36. This is almost exactly 10 seconds off the current 1500 wr. If you do the math on this, you would realize this equates to running 33.3 seconds slower than the 5k record (5k is 3.33 x the distance of the 1500). Now bear with me here:
12:37 + 33 = 13:10
Yes, Chris Solinsky, who routinely ran 12:55/56 last summer, just ran the equivalent (with the premise that the 1500 and 5000 records are of equal quality) of a 13:10 5000 m race last night. Of course 1500 is not his best event, and he demonstrated a nice kick, however, now that I put some cold hard #"s on his time..... ARE YOU STILL FREAKING OUT MAN!??!?!
Plenty of Africans in that race. Maybe a little "toothpaste" too ;)
