I understand why local and even regional races are put on the most convenient day for the majority, the weekend. Why don't more races run their race on a Monday as Boston does due to Patriot's Day? A large number of runners have to take a work day to travel anyway, so why not Monday rather than Friday? My observation is due to Boston getting so much mainstream media coverage that few other road races or track meets get including the olympic trials. I wonder if that isn't because they are competing with collegiate and professional gluttony of events contested over the weekend fighting for limited coverage.
