Are you under the impression that pre-pubescent boys run ridiculous times?
God, I have to run against this kid in the state meet as a junior and a senior and he's already running extremely competitive times.
Man. I hope I improve to get close to him...
Didn't Jordan Hasay run 4:16 at the Olympics when she was about this age?
I'm a teammate of his at Stockdale. It was pretty incredible to see him pass Albertson in the last 50-60 meters, considering what Albertson's lead was with 300 meters to go. This kid is currently undefeated in high school track--he just won't let himself lose. Very tough mentally and very strong lower body. Could hit 4:12 - 4:13 by seasons end.

Yeah, for a 1500m maybe, but not for a mile.
Sam Prakel from Versailles Ohio went 4:15 as a freshman last year. He also split a 1:54 in the 4x8 and ran 9:40 in the 3200.
I ran 4:26 for a mile and 9:24 for two miles as a 15 year old ninth grader. I was 5:5, 110 pounds then. This was over 30 years ago. I couldn't have imagined running anywhere close to 4:16 as a freshmen in high school. Heck, the 4:26 felt like a sprint, as did a 2:00 800. Certainly a great performance for this young man, and a good start for him.
How fast could you run 400m and 5K (XC) when you ran those times as a freshman? Just curious. Physically you sound a lot like a 9th grader I know who ran mid 16s for 5k in cross but I don't think he's that speedy on the track - will find out soon.

Last year jacob burcham ran a 4:15.7 full mile as a frosh. Played football his frosh year, now has a good coach...
Who is his coach now? (As if everyone in WV hasn't figured that out)

My best guess for my 400 time in 9th grade was around 53.5 or so. A 9th grader from a tough urban area nearby who was a track camp friend ran 52 flat - the basis of my memory.
I had some speed.
I was never as good in cross country as I was in track, but I did win two varsity invitationals in 9th grade and placed high in others. I distantly recall winning a 5k cc race in 15:55 or so. Again, I did not know what I was doing and just hit the front when I could. And I cannot imagine running 4:16 as a freshman, especially so early in the year.

Where did he run 4:15? He did 4:18 at state and got beat. In the 3200 at state he even got beat by another frosh.

That's true; perhaps I was a bit hasty. I don't think my message was particularly long or difficult to type, though. Either way, sorry about the response. Over the years, it seems Jeff has gotten a lot of criticism about his stellar younger performances and comparative "limited" improvement. Doesn't mean that this guy was one of them, but it sounded disingenuous upon first glance. Just wanted to make sure a comparison to Jeff See -should- be construed as nothing but a compliment. (To address the future trolls who are sure to claim I'm Jeff, or somehow know Jeff, I don't even know the guy. All I know is he's a heck of a runner, and I don't like our great runners disparaged, much less a comparison to a great runner used to degrade a nice performance by another runner.)
Have a good one.
You handled this very well...this is a perfect example as to how one should handle criticism...text book lesson in having class...
he's probably like 18. la-de-frickin-da.

I'm sure everyone from WV knows this, but Burcham's coach has always been Chris Parsons. As a freshman XC runner playing football at the same time, he only ran 20-25 mpw and had some success, but was track full time last spring.
for me this news is personally depressing.
as i high school freshmen i ran 4:44. And then I worked my butt off and in college i got down to 4:16.
honestly pretty funny to see 6-7 years of my life summed up in four minutes and sixteen seconds by a hs freshmen.
