CAMBRIDGE HONOURS FIRST SUB-FOUR MINUTE MILE
CAMBRIDGE, ONTARIO --- In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the first sub four-minute mile ?Run for Life Inc.?, a Cambridge based not for profit organization - is hosting the first annual ?Cambridge Classic Mile? race on June 18th, 2004 at Galt Collegiate Institute in Cambridge.
The day-long series of one mile races will involve hundreds of children and adults of all ages. Elite runners will try to beat four minutes in a special invitational race to climax this unprecedented event. The event motto is ?Four Minutes That Can Change Your Life.?
To recreate that historical moment when Sir Roger Bannister beat the four minute barrier at Oxford University, the track at Galt Collegiate Institute will be re surfaced with crushed clay, the same material in use fifty years ago. This project will be completed under the watchful eyes of Galt C.I. teacher Bryce Macey and his grade eleven leadership class.
Sir Roger Bannister has given his blessing to the Cambridge event - a prior commitment prevents him from attending in person - but he has also told organizers he would like to take part in the future.
The top high school milers from across Canada will be invited to race for an unofficial Canadian high school championships. Prominent sub four-minute milers from the past including two time Olympian Grant McLaren and Dave Bailey, Canada?s first sub-four minute miler have confirmed they will be at the event.
In order to raise funds to host the event Run For Life has begun selling one-metre sections of the historic track at a cost of $100 each. Each pledge will receive a lifetime entry to the event and name engraved on a commemorative monument at the track.
The day promises to be an exciting one for runners, family and friends with live jazz and blues music along the nearby Grand River creating a festive atmosphere.
