Dudes, we're having fun. Lighten up. His mask is f***ing hilarious, and still kind of cool, and totally within his right to wear. We can laugh at it at the same time.

malmo- As a pollen allergy sufferer myself, I can testify that I get symptoms well before the locally accepted "Pollen season". This is an insidious bronchial reaction to a variety of early-season tree pollen types. I imagine that running in an unfamiliar, yet pollen diverse environment (as I imagine Central Park to be, with introduced species), creates a risk of a nonzero pollen level which could easily affect performance by seconds, even tens of seconds per mile. For a professional runner, this risk is unacceptable when it can be averted (as Rupp and ALSal obviously think is possible with the mask). The fact that he waited until leaving the park is corroboration with your guess that the mask is targeted for pollen rather than air temp.
Ummm, yeah...usually temps around this time is 50-60 degrees versus winter temps of 35-39. I would suspect temps played a big role. Now, go get yourself a new inhaler to think clearly.
Rupp is a public figure. It's all part of the game he has to play for his employer. That's just the way it is.
Doing something unusual to help draw attention to yourself, and your employer if you are wearing their branded clothing, is not anything new.
It's doubtful arm warmers, and face masks will become standard ware. They are just gimmicks to get attention, and it worked extremely well.

I would not call it that, Alberto has a long history of embracing the new...checking it out, seeing if it helps.
Everyone laughed at the arm warmers, now they are standard.
.
Standard? Where?
The arm warmer fad will soon fade away just the same as leg warmers, Members Only jackets and parachute pants did.
I don't understand why people are thinking that since we're making fun of the mask, we think Rupp is slow or something.
Rupp ran well.
Rupp looked like an idiot.

Make up your mind, buddy. Which is it?
He has found a way to be both. Fast and attention getting. The sky is the limit.

"First he's gonna shit, then he's gonna kill us!"
Is it any of your damned business? No.
Where do I get one of those sweet masks? I have to walk around outside pretty much every day, and I think this would help my walking around performance.
R,
No comparsion to the PO2 in regards to work of breathing. The resistance to flow w/ Rupp's would be zilch and if the air is warmed and the airways relaxed, it would be a big net gain. Having said that, I thought the mask was ridiculous on many levels.

No one has suggested that he wore the mask partly because he was endorsed to?
That was my first reaction...the mask is a marketing ploy.
endorsed to?
coerced into
...told he could make more endorsement money if did something goofy.
Lady Gaga, Michael Jackson, the band KISS, the list is long of people who have made money from unusual looks.

Don't bet on it. The arm warmers might end up being like running tights... just standard stuff. In any case, I don't get what people's beef with them is. It's nice to have compression sleeves on your arms that aren't attached to some fabric on your body. It feels more free and comfortable.

Oh, and at least I know they're standard running gear on my team. People like them because they offer more free movement.
Perhaps they are gimmicky, but I think arm warmers are very functional. In a race, how the hell do you roll down a long sleeve shirt when your body starts to warm up? I doubt I would ever wear them for a workout or regular run, but they make sense to me in a race. There's also a psychological component as well. I like to feel like I'm suiting up for a race (lacing up light flats, putting on the singlet, etc.) Arm warmers are my cold weather addition.
You might make the argument that if the temperature will warm up you should just 'suck it up,' but why be uncomfortable on the starting line and first half/part of a race?
