Just throwing this out there... was Rupp messing with us? I mean, was this actually to prevent a potential asthma attack, or is Galen Rupp actually the greatest troll the running community has ever known?

This occurred to me. While I'm sure Salazar believed that the mask might serve some small preventative function when he had Rupp wear it, I bet they also had a quick laugh over the consternation it would cause.
"Wait till they get a load of this on LetsRun - it'll drive them crazy."
And they are successful. Anybody who is annoyed by this or has a problem with the mask should be shot.

When it gets down to -30 degrees celsius the air dries the hell out of your throat and lungs. Can't say I blame the guy for the mask, some indoor meets have left me coughing for days.
Can't wait until I can hit up a Nike store and get Rupp certified air.
Please allow me to ask a practical question or two: How exactly does the mask work, that is, what does it do, and why doesn't it restrict oxygen intake?

Obviously nobody here knows. (I certainly don't.) It will likely come up in the next few interviews Salazar does, so look out for those. I'm sure he'll enjoy explaining the science behind it.
If you want some background reading on Salazar's enthusiasm for high-tech stuff, check out the profiles published this weekend in the Wall Street Journal and the Independent (UK).

I wish Rupp had the personality to rock the mask. Imagine a post race interview with Wheating if he had worn it during a race.
Dude's a beast. Awesome race! He can wear whatever the heck he wants as far as I'm concerned. Go Galen!!!

Without a doubt! How in the hell did you notice his gloves while he had that mask on? That was ridiculous.
Everyone who keeps pressing "just focus on his run" are probably the same folks who believe "winning is all that matters". Call me an old fart, but damnit HOW you do what you do really does matter.
you are an old fart! What else do you want the guy to do? How would you prefer he does it? The guy works his ass off. What he's wearing has nothing to do with how he does something. He ran hard, he ran from the front; he took a spill, got up, and continued to race hard. As far as I am concerned, he ran with guts, I do not know how else he can do it.
I am sick of tired of people bashing Rupp because of what he wears, how he trains, etc. Rupp is American distance running. By the time he is done he may very well be the greatest American distance runner of all time. You people just cannot accept that. Get off your high horse and look at his body of work, it is amazing. And for your information winning is all that matters... and Rupp has done that too.
How anyone can watch that race and comment on the mask is beyond me. I'm not even really a Rupp fan because of all his antics and crap at Oregon, but I'm becoming more of a fan after every professional race. He ran an absurdly gutsy race in his first half, and you're worried about his damn mask? Shocking.

If it was -30 C, he'd have more issues than just dry air in his lungs......

How in the hell can any blue collar runner root for a guy that wears a damn mask while running that is not associated with religious beliefs or some nuclear shit hampering the air.
What's so great about blue collar runners? I couldn't give less of a shit what color someone's collar color is, I care how fast they run.
When the temperature drops water condenses leaving the relative moisture much lower. When you breath the mask prevents moisture from leaving and adds moisture to air coming back through the mask when you inhale. That's what I read on some other website so you can take it with a grain of salt. Also if you live somewhere cold wear a bandanna over your mouth when you run. You'll find you don't have the dry cough after your runs. And its fun, you freak people out because you look like your going to rob them.
Rupp's a badass and I thought the mask looked badass as well.
Anyone who says otherwise is either insanely jealous or is completely pre-occupied of what other's think about them, which is sad.
Last I heard, you run the race to place as high as you can. Rupp is doing his thing, not your's, or mine, or someone else's... but HIS thing. And he's doing DAMN WELL at it.
I said it earlier in the week and I'll say it again... Rupp and Solinsky are my 2 favorite runners by far. Both have character. Both are confident. Both race with a fearlessness that few others in this country race with.
I could care less about the knee-high socks that Solinsky wears, or the breath-right strips or now mask that Rupp decided to wear today.
That doesn't change a damn thing about who they are as runners or people, and I admire that they don't give a shit about what you or I think.

Just like breatherite strips it has no known physiological benefits. Exercise induced asthma occurs when it's really cold, not when it is 39 degrees.
You did see that he got right of the stupid thing during the race didn't you?
Another Salazar gimick
Rupp ran an awesome race. That isn't the issue. The fact is he looked liked a complete tool with that mask on. Plain and simple, a complete tool.

so the fact he wore it in the snow in Scotland and in 39 degree weather in NYC means nothing to you - just another salazar gimmick. Whatever dude.
You are saying that from your perch in front of a keyboard you know better than Rupp, a world-class distance runner, knows about his own reaction to the cold. Again, whatever dude.
Umm 35 degrees is not cold. Give me a break.
This is the first step towards the Nike Air Rupp product.
(Or Rupp-Air?)
