rounding into shape.
If he keeps dropping time like this, he'll be a threat by the trials.
Like I said since last year....if he stays reasonably healthy, then he's a lock for the trials top-3. I really cannot believe anyone would've considered him a long shot. When McMullen's training right, he's always got a great chance.
McMullen looked strong tonight. Don't know if I would bet on him, but after watching him do the same thing in 2001, I would not bet against him. Good luck Paul.
Isn't this what he did last time, dropping huge chunks of time in the last few months before the Trials?
He's fast, but there is never any lock. It's not like he's been super impressive this season and already running 3:52 or something. There will be many guys who are in high 3:50's shape and in a tactical race anything can happen. :D
Just how good would McMullen be if he didn't keep disappearing from the track world and re-emerging?
Vipam
GO PAUL! anyone else in the field? last year it seems like a bunch of fast UM guys were in it right? how about the womens 1500?

Perhaps he has a real life, Vipam? He's not another tool for you to live vicariously through.
3:44 for McMullen speaks loudly--kind of like walking into an abandoned house and blood starts oozing from the wall paper. RUN AWAY, BEFORE THE LAWNMOWER MAN GETS YOU!
I agree with Vipam on this one.
We're not preaching how McMullen should prioritize his life, but only speculating how well he'd do if he was a week in - week out devoted runner like most of the professionals. It's a natural question.

I believe he thought he had retired for good before the current comeback...has a baby and a military career now...is on unpaid leave from the Coast Guard to train.
Paul is a head case, he won't be there when it counts!
despite whwat "wally" thinkshe is the most head strong miler we have.....as far as the talk about him being in an out or not dedicated.....how about having alot of things going on in his life, like say, a wife and baby, occasional injury, and how about a military career that does not go hand in hand with the demands of a world class athlete(or a re-called college athlete in my case)...he is not on leave of any sort, rather training like a mad man around his work schedule.....because in the USCG we are very short handed in these times...the service does not have its prioritys on distance running, it has its priorities set on Homeland Security....
in the Special Olympics.

No he should stay

You would say that wouldn't you!
Last year when Mcmullen's name was brought as a contender for the Olympics I dismissed it. When he ran mid 14's for 5K recently I perked up and gave him a chance. Now I think he surely will qualify for the OT's and make the final. Maybe top 3 but not much time to get into 3:36 shape to actually go. But, stay tuned...

Thank you for speaking on my behalf Mr malmo! The pace was a bit slowish when Paul went to the lead and he pressed from quite a ways out. Showed he wasn't there to run some tactical 3:53 race and win w/a kick. Also showed he's in pretty good shape by running sub-4 pace over the final 800m.
Here we are in mid-April...still time to nip a few seconds off here and there. Final sidenote...seemed pretty serious beforehand...not wanting his focus distracted.
Man, what a long afternoon, eve, early AM and next afternoon that meet was!
